Breakfast is one of my three favorite meals of the day. I also really like lunch and supper. The other day breakfast my was not going well. I had made pancakes and then went to cook some eggs. The problem is that part of the shell fell into the skillet. To make matters worse one of the yokes broke and when I tried to get them out of the pan they conveniently missed my plate and fell in a heap on the stove. Another kitchen disaster! You may chuckle at my misfortune, but I cringe at my response to the mess. I immediately moved to grumbling and complaining about how nothing was going the way I wanted it to. In the final chapter of Jonah we see the same thing happening to Jonah only on a greater scale. Jonah was so angry with God’s response to the city of Nineveh in chapter 3, that he asked God to take his life (Jonah 4:3). Jonah thought that his life was not worth living because God did not treat Nineveh the way he wanted. Jonah could not accept that God will act according to His sovereignty and character. All Jonah wanted was to direct God’s judgment on sinners, not carry God’s grace to them. Like Jonah, we all complain about what God does or does not do according to our standards. If you are complaining to God, stop and re-evaluate your response to God. Are you trying to tell God what to do like Jonah? When your day crumbles into complaining, remember that God is sovereign. He wants to display His grace in your life and through your life, just like Jonah.
