Faith and Work

6/8/2025

Hebrews 11:7
Work involves thought and analysis tied to physical effort in order to see a desired result. The pay that is given when a job is finished is the result of completed work. When we are hired to do a job we work toward its completion with the resources that the employer provides. Hammers and saws may be provided for the contractor building a house, or pots and pans for a chef in a restaurant. Each worker gains more than just a paycheck, they gain a sense of purpose as they work toward the goal of finishing the house or feeding hungry customers. Employee trusts the employer to continue to manage the business in such a way that their work and its results matter. The same is true of our faith and relationship with God. In Hebrews 11:7 Noah’s faith moved him to work and build a boat because believed God. He believed that God was worthy of his loyal obedience and responded to God instruction to build the ark (Genesis 6:14). Not only did God provide the instruction, He also provided Noah the ability to work because had found favor with God (Genesis 6:8). Faith was the difference between Noah’s life and everyone else. He believed God’s message of judgment (Genesis 6:13) and he worked by faith with unquestioning obedience. Noah could have listened to the voices of reason, reality and reputation. Reason says, Why build a boat when there is not enough water? Reality says, Why start a seemingly impossible task that will take years to complete? Reputation says, What will everyone else say? Faith does not listen to the voices of distraction. Instead, faith listens to the reliable voice of God, and works to do the seemingly impossible. Our life of faith finds its purpose in honoring God and working to finish His task through His strength. Like Noah, our work of faith matters to God.

Luke 24
From my childhood, many years ago, I recall playing with the canned goods in my mother’s kitchen. The metal cans were perfect for hauling in trucks, stacking in pyramids or rolling across the floor. For Mom, the cans filled with food were a good way to keep track of mischievous boys. To this day I clearly remember the dented cans and the fun that was had in that kitchen. The problem was that after several uses the labels on the cans were no longer attached, either intentionally or unintentionally. My brothers and I did not care, but for Mom that made meal preparation interesting. I can still remember Mom shaking the cans to try and guess the contents. Wanting canned corn Mom would open a can to find peaches, or finding baked beans instead of green beans. The menu would then instantly change and the conversation at the dinner table became very interesting. On Easter morning, approximately two thousand years ago, a tomb was opened. In Luke 24 the reality regarding the contents of Jesus empty tomb challenged the disciples, because dead people do not move (1-12). However, in searching the scriptures (13-27), their eyes were opened (28-32). The disciples now faced the reality that God’s work of salvation that had just been completed. They could not keep silent regarding their encounter with Jesus (33-36). My mother did not know the contents of the cans, but her experience upon opening them changed her conversation around the table. The same was true for the disciples of Jesus. But what about us? We live in a world that is governed by human expectation and measure. Like the disciples we struggle with beliefs when God changes the reality. The resurrection of Jesus should challenge our reality, change our beliefs and clarify our conversations. The open tomb and the resurrection point to the guarantee that we can have new life through belief in Jesus.

Colossians 3:1-11
Understanding the difference between truth and falsehood has been a problem for humanity since the beginning of time, as seen in Genesis 3 with Adam and Eve. Even today, we struggle determining what is true as we watch the news. Yet, the truth will always be made clear. For example, how can you tell a real diamond from one that is fake? One simple test is to place the stone on a newspaper. If you can see through the stone and read the words it is fake. A real diamond will intensely reflect light not allowing you to see the words. A real diamond reflects the truth where a fake diamond lacks the reflective quality. As in life, you will be able to see through what is false. So what does true spirituality look like? How can we determine a genuine spiritual life in contrast to a fake? In our study of Colossians, Paul challenges his readers regarding their following of others and their false ideas about a spiritual life rather than following Christ. In Colossians chapter 3 Paul changes the focus of his letter from what to know about Christ to how to walk with Christ. With this shift, the audience is challenged to live a daily spiritual life not based on the false reality of false teaching, but on the reality of what Christ has done for them. Their focus, like ours, should be on a God pleasing lifestyle not on a life of sin and self pleasure. If Christ is truly supreme in our life then our consistent desire will be to reflect God’s purity through our lives. So, set your mind and heart to live for Christ and encourage others to do the same. If we truly believe that Christ is supreme then we will allow Him to be supreme in us and reflected through our life, like a diamond. That is genuine spiritual life.

Walk in Marriage

Ephesians 5:22-33
A mirage is an optical illusion that appears to be real. However, in reality it is not there. For example, on a hot day, the right conditions in the atmosphere can create an optical illusion or mirage. The surface of a road may look like water. It shimmers and appears to be real, but the farther you drive the more the illusion seems to shift and disappear. In Ephesians 5 Paul provides practical teaching on what the marriage of a believer in Jesus is to be like. This is not to be an illusion that just tricks the eyes of everyone else. In the book of Ephesians Paul is emphasizing the grace of God and how that changes our life. In the first three chapters Paul highlights the theological truths that change us at salvation. Now, in the final three chapters Paul emphasizes how the reality of God’s grace should change the way we live. Our belief in the good news and message of salvation through Jesus changes our heart, while His example provides the model of how we are to live. Paul relates that truth to marriage by illustrating the fact that a marriage relationship is not based on rights, expectations and privileges. Instead, a believers marriage relationship finds its substance in submitting, serving and sacrificing. Those words are hard for self centered people. Yet, when those actions are given with grace and believed by faith, that God will use our actions for His honor, a healthy marriage becomes a reality and not a mirage. Is the message and model of Jesus sacrifice and service reflected in your marriage, or is your marriage just a mirage of what it could be? As Paul illustrates in Ephesian 5:22-33, your marriage is to be a living relational model of a new spiritual reality that displays your relationship with Jesus.

Transformation: Can God Change Me?

Luke 24
If you want to spark a conversation try asking this question… “What would you do if I gave you a million dollars?” The answers are as varied as people and their individual personalities. However, underlying the answer is a root belief that something will change because of this new reality. This gift has the ability to remove concerns and worries. It changes ones perspective. The same is true of Easter. In Luke 24 the followers of Jesus were confronted with the resurrection of Jesus and that changed everything. The disciples who first saw the empty tomb (1-12) were confronted with God’s reality and the choice to believe that Jesus is alive. The troubled men walking on the road were presented the open Scriptures (13-27). The searching of the scriptures changed their perspective. The death of Jesus was necessary for true change to be offered and salvation to be a reality. Jesus opened the eyes of these men to see (28-32) that he died and returned to life. The reality that Jesus is alive and that he accomplished salvation moved these men to excitedly tell others of this new reality (33-36). Not only did they hear about Jesus being alive, they believed because they saw him. They were filled with joy and that changed their communication with others. For us today, it is easy to talk about what brings us joy. However, the joy of these disciples moved them to tell others who doubted about Jesus. The opening of our mouth as a witness naturally occurs because of our joy in Jesus. The resurrection of Jesus should challenge our doubts; change our beliefs about salvation; our understanding of God’s word; and our communication about Him. Jesus is alive and our belief in Him changes everything.

What Will You Do With Jesus?

Luke 24
It all began a week ago. There was a thump on the window and then thrashing and scratching. This continued for days until I finally caught a glimpse of a Robin staring at the window and then attacking the window in defense of its territory. The problem is that the Robin was fighting the reflection of its own image. Research has informed me that eventually the love sick Robin will stop, and tend to caring for his nest. In his angry little bird brain the Robin only sees a rival and a threat, not reality. We approach Easter and the resurrection in much the same way. On Easter we come face to face with the intersection of divinity and humanity. Jesus as a man died, but as God He was raised from the dead and returned to life. That is the dilemma the people in Luke 24 faced. At the resurrection of Jesus there were questions of belief (1-12). However, His followers publicly proclaimed that the resurrection is a reality. That was followed by the searching questions from two of His followers. However, Jesus met them, and pointed them to the Scriptures and the necessity of His death to pay for sin (13-27). Salvation is possible through belief in Jesus Christ alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 makes it clear that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ and not by anything we can do on our own. Jesus paid our debt of sin and because He lives we can have new life through Him. Our faith and hope are based on Christ and His love for us. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. As in Luke 24, Jesus wants to change us from doubters to ones who tell others of Him (33-36). What will you do with Jesus? Have your eyes been opened to the reality that that Jesus is alive (28-32)?

Grace Is No Joke

Ephesians 3:1-13
The first of April is known as April Fools’ Day. This is simply a day where certain ones of our friends or associates will create something that seems real yet is not real in order to play a prank on our gullible minds. Our minds have come to understand and accept what is normal and when there is a new change we want to accept it as well. In 1957, the BBC news reported that there was an excellent harvest of spaghetti in Switzerland. There were even pictures of workers harvesting spaghetti from tree branches. Some people even called the news station to inquire how to start their own spaghetti tree. They were told to place spaghetti noodles in tomato sauce and see what happens. We may laugh at the misfortune of some, but we still have people in our world that reject the greatest reality as nothing more than a hoax. In Ephesians 3:1-13 Paul reminds the church of the reality of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection that unites people through salvation in Jesus Christ. That is good news! This display of God’s grace was, as Paul says, a mystery now revealed (2-6) that he is now privileged to share with others (7-9). His message (10-12) is simply to proclaim that Jesus is alive and has accomplished salvation through His death and resurrection. That is good news and not a joke.

Ahhh.... Christmas

John 1:1-13; John 20:31
Ahhhh… Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year…. The other year we were in downtown Chicago and decided to walk through the Christmas Market. It was suppose to be fun and relaxing but instead it turned into an extreme practice of patience as we battled wall to wall people and claustrophobia. After taking 30 minutes to walk like penguins bounced about like a pinball we finally made it out of the compacted crowd. Ahhh… Relief at last! Then out of the corner of my eye I saw something and pulled my wife saying we really need to see this after what we just experienced. Before us was a life size Nativity scene. We paused, pondered and praised God for the proclamation of the truth of Christmas displayed in the midst of chaos. Proclaming and presenting Jesus as the Savior of the world is the message of our text today. Ahhh… Reality. John writes so that we may believe that Jesus is the Savior and by believing we may have life in His name.
