The Storm

Matthew 7:24-29
The other day a storm blew through our town and attacked my street. Looking out the window, I watched as the dark clouds approached. The lightning flashed, the thunder cracked, and the wind driven rain seemed to fall in buckets. From the safety of inside I watched as the trees whipped wildly back and forth. I was not affected. The house, despite its age, did not creak or groan. It was unmoved. I found out later that our street made the news for all the damage. Across the street there were large trees down that took work crews with heavy equipment several days to clean up. My neighbor and I, each had a large branch down in the yard. The road into town was littered with trees that did not survive the storm, but my house stood firm. Why? The answer is simple. Under my house is one big rock. My house is anchored to the rock. In Matthew 7 Jesus mentions two men who each built a house. One built on sand, and one built on a rock. Which one do you think was able to withstand the storms? Jesus used the house to illustrate the life of the individual. He opens this story by stating that the person who hears His words and practices what is heard is like the man who built on a rock (24). From the outside the houses, or lives, look similar. The difference is found in the anchoring structure that is tested in the storms of life. Following Jesus is not just symbolic or stylistic. Following Jesus offers eternal spiritual value and practical daily substance that changes the way you live. How you respond during the pressures and storms of life will display on what you have built your life. Knowing Christ and His word is essential for now and eternity. Our belief in Jesus and the practice of a victorious new life provides a firm foundation that withstands any storm.

Cure for the Culture

Philippians 1:9-11
When we think of a broken heart we often think of a love that is lost and the individual flounders searching for a personal emotional cure to a failed relationship. However, there is actually a health issue called broken heart syndrome. This heart problem is caused by some sudden stress that is placed upon the individual. This stress may come from a physical event like a car accident, an emotional event like grief or fear and even perhaps from consuming certain strong or spicy foods. The symptoms of broken heart syndrome are very much like a heart attack with chest pain and shortness of breath. However, broken heart syndrome is reversible within a few days or weeks because its cause is tied to the body and its production of a large amount of adrenaline. As we look at our world we see people with a spiritual heart issue. We see people living with a broken heart and not knowing the cure, and yet searching for one. As Paul says in Philippians chapter one there is a cure, and we as believers in Jesus Christ carry the cure. Paul is praying for the Philippian church that their love will thrive and multiply (19). This is an admission that they are a loving church, but also a petition asking God to step in and work in the life of this church even more. This love that the church has is a love that imitates God’s love in its sacrifice and service. This is not a romantic love or even a love between friends. God’s love is to be lived out by His followers because He has loved them first and therefore the church has the ability, capacity and example of how to love (1 John 4:19). We carry the cure of Christ and His forgiveness and love to a world full of people with a broken heart. God displays His cure for our culture through us as we love like Him.

Call to the Culture

Ephesians 6:19-20
What is an ambassador? If you are a car enthusiast you will recognize that Nash Motors and later AMC produced a full size car called the Ambassador. There is also a widely popular Indian vehicle named the Ambassador. However, an ambassador is more than just a car. An ambassador describes a type of person who plays a specific role as an official appointed representative. On the governmental side, this requires a wide array of knowledge, language and communication skills and then being sent to a specific country. A person could also be a brand ambassador who promotes a certain product as an influencer. In general, an ambassador is sent by an official, to represent them, and communicate for them. In Ephesians six, Paul states that he is an ambassador (20). He understands the role of an earthly ambassador and he transfers that idea into the spiritual arena. Paul is asking that the Ephesian believers would pray for him to be a faithful ambassador of Jesus (19). He has a responsibility and a privilege to be given the role. Paul has gained this position because of his belief in Jesus as His Savior. He now carries the gospel message of good news that Jesus forgives sin and reconciles the sinner to God. The sole desire of Paul is to complete the mission as an ambassador and deliver the message of Jesus faithfully, with boldness. But notice that Paul is in chains. He has been imprisoned because of his belief in Jesus. Even though his circumstances are limiting, his only concern is fulfilling his duty and carrying the message of Jesus to others. We, as believers, are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19-20). We are to be like Paul and faithfully deliver the message that Jesus has changed our life. Our purpose as ambassadors is to be on God’s mission, delivering His message of hope and forgiveness to our culture. Our world is waiting. We must be faithful ambassadors.

Courage in the Culture

Ephesians 3:12-21
Obstacles and opposition; these are the problems that courage overcomes. However, as I stood shaking, my courage was gone. Zip, zap, gone. It all started with an invitation to an obstacle course. Two unimposing poles stood in the clearing. The challenge was to climb the first pole, stand on the top and then jump and grab on to the second pole. Sounds easy, right? Even with safety ropes and a harness strapped to me the pole still swayed. Somehow I managed to climb up and stand on the flat top of the pole that was no larger than a small dinner plate. That is when it hit. I lost all courage and excitement for this insane adventure. It is amazing how I could stand on almost nothing and the eight feet to the next pole was an impossible leap of faith. I froze in fear. I had lost my courage to overcome the obstacle. The same in true in our lives. Fear keeps us from moving forward, while faith motivates us with the knowledge that nothing will harm us. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church, chapter three is the transitional hinge from theological truths to practical application. Paul closes the first half of the letter with a prayer for their inner strength (16). He does not pray for external or physical solutions, instead, he prays for their inner perspective. He desires that they know Christ and His power and love for them (17-19). At the point of salvation the believer in Jesus positionally comes into instant possession of all the resources available in Christ. Paul is challenging His readers to not only believe in their head, but know experientially by faith, the vast resources of Christ that give freedom to live courageously for Christ. Knowing Christ is like the safety line on the obstacle course. That relationship allows us to courageously take steps of faith in obedience to Christ call. That perspective and practice is counter to our culture.

Counter to the Culture

Ephesians 1:17-23
Fitting in, as people we are created for relationships and desire acceptance. Yet at times we are willing to compromise our values and beliefs to gain the fleeting praise and acceptance of others. This is simply called peer pressure. We often think of this term in relation to teenagers who are pressured by their peers into making unwise decisions. However, we can be pressured to conform even when we are older. It is often said that, “Everything is for sale and everyone has a price.” The book of Daniel records perhaps the best recognized examples of a response to peer pressure. The first chapter records Daniel and his three friends in a foreign land in training to serve the king. Daniel resolved in his mind not to defile himself with the food that was unclean and unacceptable by God’s standards (Daniel 1:8). Later in the book the three friends of Daniel are threatened with death if they did not worship the gold statue of the king. In the face of immense pressure they reaffirm their belief in God to deliver, and their resolute refusal not bow to the statue (Daniel 3:16-18). Where does that kind of confidence come from? In Ephesians chapter one Paul prays that the Ephesian church will know God better (17). He prays that they will know the hope, riches and power found only in knowing God (18-23). Our hope is based on Christ and not on what we dream to achieve. Our wealth is found in a merciful God who lavished on us the gift of His Son who died for us to make it possible for us to become part of His family. The same unmatched power that God used to raise Jesus from the grave is now resident in the one who places their faith in Christ to save them. Through God’s power we can withstand temptations and live counter to the pressures found in our culture.

Living by Faith

Habakkuk 1:12-2:20
As I walked toward the garden I noticed movement. Further investigation revealed several small green and yellow birds inside the netting that covered the berry plants. With a total length of about four inches they were small enough to wriggle through the mesh that kept larger birds from eating the berries. The problem is that once inside they could not figure out how to get out. Would I step into their world and release them, or would I allow them to continue to suffer? The book of Habakkuk records the on going conversation between God and the prophet Habakkuk. The author, Habakkuk, questions when God will put a stop to the sin, injustice and idolatry (1:12-17). God counters with the challenge to live by faith (2:4). Habakkuk, as one who was righteous, was to take his eyes off others and truly live a life of faith that contrasted the sin of others. He was to live this upright God honoring life because of his faith in God. When all others are being unfaithful to God Habakkuk was to live counter to his culture and display his confident belief in God. Habakkuk saw the problems of sin within his own country of Judah, but he also saw the greater sin of the coming Babylonians. This grieved him and caused him to question God. Do the conditions in our world deepen our dependence on God and commitment to Him? Like Habakkuk, God still calls us to live by faith trusting His sovereign power and plan. God is at work calling us to Himself and cleansing us to live a righteous life through faith in Him. Like the birds that were caught, we need a savior to step into our world and free us to live by faith for Him alone. God has accomplished that through Jesus. This passage reminds us that the righteous will live by faith trusting in the only sovereign savior, Jesus.

Renewed

Colossians 3:1-11
Understanding the difference between truth and falsehood has been a problem for humanity since the beginning of time, as seen in Genesis 3 with Adam and Eve. Even today, we struggle determining what is true as we watch the news. Yet, the truth will always be made clear. For example, how can you tell a real diamond from one that is fake? One simple test is to place the stone on a newspaper. If you can see through the stone and read the words it is fake. A real diamond will intensely reflect light not allowing you to see the words. A real diamond reflects the truth where a fake diamond lacks the reflective quality. As in life, you will be able to see through what is false. So what does true spirituality look like? How can we determine a genuine spiritual life in contrast to a fake? In our study of Colossians, Paul challenges his readers regarding their following of others and their false ideas about a spiritual life rather than following Christ. In Colossians chapter 3 Paul changes the focus of his letter from what to know about Christ to how to walk with Christ. With this shift, the audience is challenged to live a daily spiritual life not based on the false reality of false teaching, but on the reality of what Christ has done for them. Their focus, like ours, should be on a God pleasing lifestyle not on a life of sin and self pleasure. If Christ is truly supreme in our life then our consistent desire will be to reflect God’s purity through our lives. So, set your mind and heart to live for Christ and encourage others to do the same. If we truly believe that Christ is supreme then we will allow Him to be supreme in us and reflected through our life, like a diamond. That is genuine spiritual life.

The Disciple's Connection

John 15:1-8
The garden this past summer produced a bumper crop of sunflowers. In fact one was over sixteen feet tall. However, large objects like that do not handle the force of wind very well. Examining the garden after a bit of strong wind revealed sunflower damage. Several plants were down. Upon further inspection we saw that two of the sunflowers had broken stalks and were wilting because they lost their connection to the roots and the life giving nutrients supplied to them. The plants with the broken stalks were beyond repair. They wilted, died and had to be removed. Just as the connection to the roots is essential for a sunflower to grow so also the disciple must remain connected to Christ to grow. In John 15 Jesus tells His disciples that he is the true life giving vine (1). Spiritual growth and fruitfulness are only found though our connection to Christ as our savior. That connection is formed as we trust in Christ’s sacrificial payment of our sin. However, Jesus does not end the conversation with saving faith. He challenges the disciples to a growing faith that is spiritually productive (4). The production of faith and true spiritual life is never found through individual effort. Jesus says that apart from Him there is no life and no fruit (5). The challenge that Jesus leaves His disciples, and us, is to allow His power to flow through us to produce His results and His praise (8). God desires that we have fruitful spiritual lives known for righteousness, giving, serving, and witnessing. That can only be accomplished through a relationship with Christ as we are connected to Him as savior. That connection is maintained through time in the word, prayer, fellowship and worship. Are we connected to Christ? Remember, just like a sunflower, it is not how tall you grow, but that you remain connected.

Ministry of Character

1 Timothy 5:17-25
I have a very quiet old dog. She can be a real character at times. For example when she wants a treat she walks over to me, puts her nose on my hand and just stares at me. Her funny little quirks just make me laugh. However, character goes beyond the external actions to the motivations of the heart. Our character is much like the foundation of a house. It is silently below the surface supporting all that is seen above ground. Character can be described as the individual qualities of a person that are formed deep within the moral fabric of ones life. Our character can be good or bad and that can lead to a good or bad reputation based on our actions. As we open the letter of 1 Timothy, again we hear the wise words of the spiritual elder Paul, instructing Timothy on how to form a ministry based on character. First, Paul notes that dedicated servants of God build dedicated people for God (17-18). Timothy is reminded that the teaching elder is dedicated to serving God and building people for God. Second, the reputation of Godly character is highly treasured otherwise it’s hastily tarnished (19-20). Godly leaders in the church are essential examples of faith and practice for the church. Third, Godly character formed by being faithful to God is a continual practice not an irregular event (21-25). Timothy needed to select and develop faithful Godly leaders who would provide stability for the church. We can be characters or live a life of God honoring character. Are we dedicated to God’s way, building a reputation for living God’s way, and continuing in God’s way? There is an old saying that says, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. However, God can reshape our character no matter how old we are using His Word, His Spirit and His church if we let Him.

Participate in Worship

Psalm 95
Last night I walked outside before heading off to bed. The evening was quiet except for the singing of crickets, the occasional faint rumble of distant thunder, and the systematic staccato flash of lightning. The pitch black night sky was illuminated by the continued and consistent bursts of lightning that almost hurt the eyes to look at. Without a doubt, I knew there was a storm brewing because of what I saw. The pulsating flashes in the night sky announced that God was doing something. Just as the night sky as not silent about God’s work neither should the believer in Jesus be silent about His work in their life and world. In Acts 2:46-47 we see that the believers in the early church were beacons that displayed God’s greatness through their committed worship and devotion to God. What is our worship like? Do we have the same enthusiasm for God like the early church? Did you realize that believers in Jesus Christ are designed by God to be worshipers? Just as lightning lights up the night sky, we are to declare the praises of God who has saved us (1 Peter 2:9). So how do we worship? Psalm 95 provides a good starting point in directing our worship. The author begins with an invitation, and challenges his audience to participate in worship of the LORD (1-2). We are to worship God who is great (3-5) and proclaim His greatness (7). However, like the Psalmist, we must come to worship in humility (6). Worship is more than the songs we sing. Worship is a personal and corporate lifestyle honoring God. We are to sing and declare His praises, but we are also to daily live the reality of His power displayed through us. Like lightning, we as believers we are to be beacons that display God’s greatness through our committed worship of Him.

Walk as a Family

Ephesians 6:1-4
I have an old dog. For those of you who have had old animals, you can relate. This old dog, like others that I have had, has become disinterested in food. I have realized this and have tried to keep her healthy by making her meals more exciting. I am now sprinkling the magical pixie dust of parmesan cheese on her food. Now, every meal is a treat of spaghetti and meatballs. It is funny to watch her apathy at every meal turn into excitement which turns into an appetite, which leads to nutrition and then good health. Similarly, our lives as believers are strengthened by feeding on God’s Word and then excitedly living out the truth through His grace and strength that He provides. That is what Paul wants from the Ephesian believers as he writes to them in Ephesians 6:1-4. Paul first addresses children, challenging them to live obediently toward parents and honor them (1-3). Then he turns his attention to fathers, or more accurately parents by encouraging them in the proper use if their authority within the home (4). Paul desires for his audience to truly be changed by God’s grace so it is displayed in the home and shown as an example to the community. Today, we need to understand that God’s grace changes us at the cross when we believe in Jesus for salvation. God then enables us, through His grace, to live a transformed life with His power by His Spirit. Parents need to understand that the purpose of their parental responsibility is to show God’s transforming grace and not bend children to their will. Children need to understand that their obedience is a sign that God has truly changed them to ultimately honor Him. Like an old dog, our life is renewed by God’s grace and that should excite us, transform us and change our families.

Walk of Love and Light

Ephesians 5:1-14
There is an old saying that states, “A fake is a cheap imitation of the real thing.” Allow me to add to that… A fake is a cheap imitation of the real thing that looks good on the outside, but on the inside it lacks substance. In other words, I could illustrate that concept with a piece of jewelry. A real piece of jewelry will be made with gold or silver through and through. However you can get an imitation jewelry set for children that is not authentic. It may have the shine on the outside but it is lightweight and made of plastic. As we continue in our study of Ephesians, Paul also continues his practical emphasis of the how the believer is to live that he began in chapter 4. As we turn the page to chapter 5, Paul challenges his audience to be imitators of God (1). He first explains that the one who believes in Jesus as savior is to walk or imitate a life of sacrificial love as modeled by Jesus (2). However, people have a tendency to twist and corrupt what God designs as good. Paul warns the Ephesian church against the self centered, sinful perversion of love, and following falsehood instead of God (3-6). Paul then shifts his thinking to talk about living or walking as children of light (7-8). We imitate God by participating in what is spiritually healthy and fruitful, and not the deeds of sin (11). Paul is trying to tell his audience that they need to allow the reality of their salvation to seen by those around them (11-13). Just as a flashlight has no power on its own apart from the battery, so those who believe in Jesus are to utilize His power to live. In doing so, we let His light shine through us, to guide others to Him, as the true source of real life change.

What is a Disciple?

Luke 14:25-35
Summer camp was fun. It was the anticipated annual event that I remember attending as a kid. There were many activities and things to learn and do, but my favorite was the skill class, and for that I always chose archery. I was, and still am, intrigued by the skill needed to shoot an arrow and get it to hit the center of the target. It is actually harder than it looks. In the skill class the teacher helped us learn the technical side of archery and the form needed to shoot correctly. However, there was much more. We were required to memorize safety rules and implement them at all times in the class. I quickly learned that listening to the teacher and doing what he taught really helped my efficiency in using the bow and the accuracy of shooting the arrow. As I progressed in skill and knowledge the teacher gave me the task of helping others learn the technicalities of archery and do it safely. The same is true for a disciple of Jesus Christ. We begin our spiritual life when we not only believe, but accept that Jesus has paid the price for our sin. It is from that point forward that we are given the challenge to “hear the word of God and obey it!”(Luke 11:28). A true disciple of Jesus is literally a committed follower who accepts His teaching as valuable for all of life and puts it into practice. In Luke 14:25-35 Jesus gives several key characteristics of a disciple. It all begins with a relationship with Him (26) and a commitment to Him (27). Like in archery, when we depend on Jesus and listen to Him as our teacher we will have something of spiritual value, that can be passed on to others, that will guide them in their daily walk with Him.

Job's Character

Job 1:1-5
A police officer was making his rounds in the city. As he approached one intersection he noticed a commotion in the traffic ahead. As he puled his patrol car closer he saw an irate woman screaming at the top of her lungs, throwing stuff at other cars, and honking her horn for no reason at all. After observing this for a bit the officer turned on his lights and pulled the woman over. The woman angrily questioned why she was being stopped. The officer replied that he noticed the bumper sticker on the back that said, “Follow Me To Church.” He continued, “I looked at the bumper sticker, and I looked at your actions, and I thought that the car must be stolen.” Saying one thing and doing another is the definition of hypocritical character and a life that is spiritually out of balance. Character matters because it is the moral resolve in life that leads to a life lived with integrity, resulting in a good reputation. We see this in the life of Job. Even though Job was very wealthy (3), he still lived out his faith in front of his community (1), and family (2). There are three things that we can learn from Job in these verses. First, our character will display our relationship to God (1). How we live will authenticate what we claim about our relationship to God. If we talk about God but do not live for Him, then God is not followed. Second, our character will impact our view of money and possessions (3). How we treat our possessions will authenticate our relationship with God. If money and possessions are more important, then God is less important. Third, our character will impact our spiritual relationship with others (4-5). How we treat others spiritually will authenticate our relationship with God. If we say nothing about Jesus and do not point others to Jesus, then is He our God?

The Disciple's Characteristic: Obsession

1 Corinthians 6:9-12
Why do car manufacturers place the steering wheel in front of the driver? Why not in the back seat or the trunk? Why not let the passengers in the back seat have all the controls for the lights, the radio, the heat and the turn signal? The purpose is so the driver can focus and on the most important thing, driving. All the controls are centered within reach of the drivers seat so the driver can control every aspect of the car as it is directed down the road. Our lives are much like that of a car. We have been made for the purpose of being directed and moving. All of our emotional switches and character knobs exist to fine tune our operation and function as we move. The problem is that we think that we, as the car, do not need a driver. We need Christ in our lives as Savior and need to give Him operational control. We need Christ inside, not as a passenger, but as the driver. We need to allow Him to have the driver’s seat to take us where He wants us to go. Disciple’s of Christ will allow Christ to have full control of their lives. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-12, Paul writes to the Corinthian church, who had allowed the world and culture to influence their spiritual lives and relationship with God. This church struggled with allowing Christ to control every area of their lives even to the point of justifying and making excuses for sin (12). Paul says that the spiritual excuses are not beneficial for their spiritual lives. He closes the verse by stating, “I will not be controlled by anything.” Paul is stating that, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, his only desire is for Christ to control his life and be the source of his confidence and perspective. We must be obsessed with knowing Christ and allowing Him alone to drive our lives.

Reproduction of Disciples

2 Timothy 2:1-2
Spring is just around the corner… well not really. However, now is the time to begin making plans for the garden. We may think of new or better locations to place certain plants based on how much shade or sunlight they need. We may gather the tools and plan a new garden design. But, all of this is useless unless we have seeds to plant in the warm spring soil. Seeds will naturally want to grow with the proper sunlight, soil, and water. Under these conditions the plant will sprout into a seedling, continue to grow as an immature plant, and finally develop as a mature plant that produces a crop. At maturity the plant is able to produce seeds that can be used to reproduce a crop for the following year. There is a life cycle in nature and people that starts with birth and leads to maturity. God has designed all that He has created to grow into maturity. However, do we think the same way about our spiritual life? Often when we think about our spiritual life we only think about the start. We think of the good news of Jesus coming at Christmas to bring us salvation. When we believe in Christ as Savior we gain His gift of salvation. That is only the beginning. That new life and the transformation is to be on going and maturing just as we see in nature. Our spiritual life does not stop at salvation, it is to continue, grow, develop, and mature in us. God has intentionally created all that is around us, including us, for growth and maturity. Stagnation and remaining in one spiritual life stage is not normal. It is unhealthy. God’s purpose in sending Jesus to be our Savior is to save us and mature us so we can spiritually reproduce and be used by God to plant new spiritual seed in the soil of others lives.

Christmas & Illumination

John 1:4-9
I grew up in an era when the Christmas lights were the size of your thumb. They were the kind that you had to watch carefully because they would get hot and produce enough heat to start a dry Christmas tree on fire. As the years progressed my family replaced those with strings of smaller lights that were less dangerous. It was a real treat when we got the little lights that would flash on and off. It sure added a dimension to the tree that the old big bulbs never could. Still, to this day, I truly enjoy watching the colorful lights dance around the tree and reflect their light off the ornaments hanging on the tree. As I look at the twinkling lights on the tree they remind me of the light that Jesus Christ has brought into the world. Isaiah 8:19-22 speaks of the spiritual darkness and sin of the people. Yet, as we move into the next verses, Isaiah gives hope to the sinful people. A Savior will come for those surrounded by the gloom of sin (Isaiah 9:1-7). This darkness of sin leads to separation from God and others. Even the shepherds (Luke 2:8-20) and the wisemen (Matthew 2:1-12), in the Christmas story, were considered outsiders and not acceptable. Yet Jesus came to show His grace and acceptance of all who turn to Him for salvation. It is His power that transforms our lives. Just as a strand of Christmas lights can never produce light on their own unless plugged in. Likewise we who follow Christ are only able to live a new life through His transforming power that enlightens and enables us (John 8:12). Jesus is the Savior for sinners and the Savior that offers salvation to all. He saves us so we can walk a transformed life by His power and display His light to others.

Control of the Heart

James 3:13-18
Years ago I remember reading Famous Monkey Last Words by Paul White. This book is part of a children’s series where the author uses animal characters to teach a spiritual truth. The main characters are a wise giraffe, a friendly but strong hippo, and a mischievous monkey named Toto. Through out the various stories Toto is the one who places himself in difficult circumstances all because he has not acted wisely. In Famous Monkey Last Words, the curious Toto wanted to see a zebra. The giraffe, as his teacher, had told him to never stand behind a zebra. However, Toto did not listen and walked right up behind the zebra and smacked it with some thorns. Well, you can imagine what happened! The zebra kicked, and the little monkey Toto went flying. He had been taught and reminded, but he did not apply the knowledge to his life. In the final verses of James 3, the author records a thought provoking question by asking, “Who is wise?” (13). James says that wisdom is proven by living out what you know to be true with humility. True wisdom does not act in self centered ways (14) which point to an ungodly alliance with Satan (15) and leads to a life of disorder (16). The alternative for disorder is living by God’s wisdom (17). The rule of God and His wisdom in our lives is displayed through the purity of an upright life that seeks God’s peace (18). James wants his audience to see that the internal issues of the heart directly impact our speech and life. God’s wisdom will change our speech and life as we allow God to change our heart and thoughts. There are many things that may cause us to lack peace. When we ask God for wisdom, (see James 1:5), and submit by faith, believing that His ways are best, He will give peace.

Act Justly: The Results of Corruption

Micah 2:3-13
This past year I have noticed an orange spot developing in front of my house. Upon closer inspection I found it to be rust that is dripping from a developing rust spot on the car that is always parked there. Rust is the visible result of weakened metal due to a corrosive process called oxidation. This process is accelerated by the exposure to moisture, salt and the chemicals that are put on the icy roads in the winter. The only way to remove the rust from the vehicle is to remove the car from the corrosive environment and remove the rust. That requires taking the car to an automotive body shop where a technician will cut out the rusted metal and replace it with good new metal. Like the rust on the car Micah 2 records the results of ongoing corrupting sin. In a way Micah describes a courtroom scene where charges are brought against the guilty. The charge of civil corruption is leveled against those who operated out of personal greed and took land that was not allotted to them by God (4-5). Next is the charge of spiritual corruption where the people rejected God and His somber message (6-7). The final charge is one of moral corruption (8-11). The people and the prophets were guilty of using falsehood for their own personal benefit. In view of these serious charges God still offers hope and a cure for sin (12-13). Hope is given, salvation is promised and a savior is coming. That is good news for us even today. God will provide an accurate assessment of our life and the corruption of our sin, but he also offers hope and a cure for sin through Jesus and His gift of salvation. God displays His justice to us and we are to display His justice though our lives to our world.

What Are You Doing Here?

1 Kings 19:1-14
Years ago I learned the value of sunglasses while on a fishing trip. The sun was out and the water was clear, but the fish were not biting. I could sort of see the fish in the stream but my lure was just not getting to them. The problem involved a scientific term known as light refraction. This is an optical illusion where light changes direction when in contact with water. The reality behind the science is that my hook was traveling behind the fish and not in front of the fish where it could be seen. I only learned that after using sunglasses from another fisherman that cut down the light so I could see clearly. Just as our physical perspective can be skewed without sunglasses so our spiritual perspective can be distorted without God’s perspective. In 1 Kings 19 Elijah came to the point of believing that he was the only one left serving God (10, 14). In reality he was not alone because there were over 7000 who had not bowed down to the idol Baal (18). However, his twisted perspective led to disillusionment and discouragement. How can we live to see God’s perspective when we are distracted by discouragement? First we need to rely on God’s perspective and not be influenced by the fear of evil that surrounds us (1-4). Next we must depend on God provision (5-8) and remain where He has placed us (9-10). Discouragement will lead to fear and running away yet God calls us to trust Him. Finally, we need to seek God’s presence (11-14). God brought Elijah to a place where he saw God’s power and heard God’s voice. Today, God still asks, “What are you doing here?” Like Elijah we often get to this location because of fear. God helps us live by faith with His perspective.

Where Are You?

Genesis 3:6-11
The other day we discovered that the floor mop had broken. I tried to fix a plastic part, but to no avail. So a trip to the store for a replacement was needed. I could go to the store and wander around hoping that I would eventually bump into the isle of mops. Or, I could respond to the question from a store employee… What can I help you find today? The response of the employee will give me directions to the proper location, or perhaps they will even take me to the exact spot in the store. The store employee is trained to greet customers and ask what they need because it creates a relationship, builds trust and provides increased sales. We may know where the right store is but not know where to find what we need to solve our problem. In a good store a question starts a conversation that leads to a solution. We see the same thing take place in Genesis 3 as God calls out to Adam and Eve, “Where are you?” (9). This question defined the position of Adam and Eve as hiding from God (10). They thought they could hide and that was faulty because God knows everything. Secondly, the question of “Where are you?” has to do with the relationship that Adam and Eve had with God. He was still pursuing them even though they had sinned. Thirdly, the question of “Where are you?” directs our purpose of living to return to God and be forgiven and restored by Him. I pray that you will desire Jesus because He desires to be your savior and the leader of your life. He alone gives purpose to life and hope for all eternity. He alone determines the process of restoration as we trust in Him for salvation. He alone defines our position as children who are close to Him.

Not So Hot

Revelation 3:14-22
Summer is just around the corner and along with it comes hot weather. If you are outside on a hot day a cool drink of water is refreshing, just like a hot coffee is soothing on a cold winter day. We desire the beverage that is opposite the temperature that we experience in order to be refreshed. However, if the coffee is barely warm or the water is slightly hot we will dump it out and get something that is truly refreshing. That is the response that Jesus had to the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3. Often we may read verse 16 as being hot in our spiritual relationship with Jesus as a good thing and being cold as a bad thing. Notice that Revelation 3:16 says… “because you are lukewarm, and neither hot or cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Jesus is not condemning either temperature of hot or cold in the illustration, but rather the compromise of being spiritually lukewarm. He challenges the church to redefine what they view as valuable (18), and calls them to turn from their independence (19). The church of Laodicea had pushed Christ out of their life. Now Jesus describes Himself as being outside and knocking to come in and renew fellowship with them (20). Like this church we need to accept Christ’s analysis of our life because He is faithful and true (14), and respond to His invitation to renewed fellowship. Christ desires for us to imitate Him in pure righteousness not compromising lukewarmness. Our passion should be one that invests in what holds spiritual and eternal value not what is temporary and worldly. If we choose to be spiritually lukewarm we choose a spiritual life that is not so hot. May that not be true of us. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to get a glass of cold water.

Lifelessness of Past Success

Revelation 3:1-6
Have you ever had a difficult time getting to sleep. Sometimes I can’t sleep and I just lay in bed wide awake. I am not the only one. Approximately 30 percent of all adults suffer from occasional insomnia. A sleepless night can be caused by worry, depression, stress or illness. However there is help. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid that helps overcome the effects of insomnia. We can find this sleep aid in milk which is why a glass of warm milk is often used to help us fall asleep. Falling asleep is one thing, but have you ever had a hard time waking up? You know what I am talking about, when your alarm goes off and you don’t hear it. The church of Sardis in Revelation 3 was that church. Sardis had a reputation of being spiritually vibrant in the past, but in the present they were dead (1). They lacked the measurements of spiritual life and Jesus challenged them to wake up (2). However, it is often hard to wake up and be alert physically and even more so spiritually. That is why Jesus reminds the church that He will come in judgment and take the little they have, just like a thief (3). For us today, our past spiritual reputation must not be our focus. We must be consistently known as being passionate for Jesus alone. In the present, we must be seen as followers of Jesus, not casual observers. Like Sardis, Christ is calling those who are spiritually asleep and dead to a revival for a new future lived through His resurrection power. We must be continually submissive, allowing Christ to lead us by living out His words. Sardis was not awake and spiritually lifeless. The same can be said of us, if we believe that our past spiritual success is a guarantee of our present faith.

Tolerating Corruption in the Church

Revelation 2:18-29
When it was built the old shed was fine, but over the years it gradually fell into decay because it lacked a solid foundation. Having been built right on the ground the floor supports began to rot. I needed a shed, and this building was on the property. I would save a lot of time if I could salvage the foundation. So I went to work and jacked up the building and placed concrete blocks on the ground and good wood on top of the concrete to support the shed. The end result was a revitalized building that is still in use today all because it has a solid foundation. In many ways, I believe that our life can be illustrated by that shed. We need to understand the solid foundation of God’s word so the corruption of the world will not cause our spiritual life to slowly rot away. This was the problem of the church in Thaytira. They did not practice spiritual discernment and slowly fell into decay. Simply put, they tolerated the moral compromise of a sinful woman as leader in the church (20-23). Jesus encouraged those who were faithful (19) to persuade them to continue being faithful (25). Like Thyatira, we need to be discerning about spiritual authority. We need to discern that what is taught follows the authority of scripture. We need to be discerning in our own lives and follow God’s authority. Finally, we need to discern that God is the sole authority in the church. A title and a position that lack the support of God and His word will not provide an example of God’s transformative power or teaching for spiritual change. A church that lacks discernment and discerning people will be a place ripe for the rottenness of sin and decay. Our foundation must be based on Christ and nothing else.

Lost Love

Revelation 2:1-7
Have you ever seen puppy love? It is often said that the first stage of human love is puppy love. So, what is puppy love? Think about it. You are asked by a friend if you want one of the puppies that their dog just recently gave birth to. As you look at the wriggling litter of fuzzy cuteness one puppy catches your eye. You pick up the little bundle to get a better look and then lose all control as the puppy wags its tail and licks your face. Your first love may be called puppy love because of the human attraction and bond of that attraction without the wagging of tails. But what about our spiritual first love? In Revelation 2:1-7 the church of Ephesus is commended for the way that they have stood for the truth of God’s word (2-3). They have worked hard and know the truth, but Jesus Christ points out that that they have left their first love (4). Literally they have looked at the face of Jesus, the one that loves them, and they have consciously walked away. They are given the command to remember what they have left, repent and turn around and return to loving the one that loves them (5-6). Losing the excitement of our first love is human but it should not be true of our spiritual lives. This church was doing all the right things because they knew all the right answers, but they had lost their passion for Jesus who loves them. You may have known Christ for years, sat through hundreds of church services and heard all the Bible stories. You just don’t feel in love anymore. We need to have a true devotion for God, not just go through the motions for God. If that is true of you remember Jesus has not turned away, you have.
