Who Is Jethro?
Relationship of Jethro
Jethro is the father in law of Moses. He is mentioned very little, but what Moses writes about him is important. He first steps onto the pages of the Bible in Exodus when Moses ran from Egypt to Midian (Exodus 2:14-15) where he met and married Jethro’s daughter Zipporah (Exodus 2:16-22). As Exodus 3 begins we see that Moses is working as a shepherd for Jethro (Exodus 3:1) when God appeared to him and spoke to him from the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-4:17). Moses then returns to Jethro, to tell his father-in-law about what God has told him to do and Jethro gives his blessing to leave (Exodus 4:18). In the chapters that follow there is no mention of Jethro until chapter 18 of Exodus. |
Action of Jethro
In Exodus 18 we see Jethro reappear and reunite with Moses (Exodus 18:1-6), observe what God has done (Exodus 18:7-12), but notice some organization and leadership problems that were wearing Moses down (Exodus 18:13-23). Jethro then speaks to Moses offering advice and encouragement on how to retool his leadership of the nation. Moses accepts and acts on this advice (Exodus 18:24-27) and Jethro leaves. |
Example of Jethro
This website is designed to be a simple resource of biblical encouragement and advice just like Jethro gave to Moses. On these pages you will find some simple tools and practical advice that will encourage you in in your personal walk with God and help in your service to others. |
Need for TOOLSOften because of isolation, finances or time an individual or ministry leader may not have the ability to make the needed connections that could assist and help provide encouragement for the local ministry to grow. Doctrinal Statement
The Bible
I believe the Bible to be God’s written communication of His love for all mankind. This book, though made up of 66 books, is completely true and without error because the human authors were guided by God in their writing and inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is completely accurate in the original languages and is the final authority for the believers life, conduct and knowledge of God.
2 Timothy 3:16, John 17:3,17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Romans 3:4; Hebrews 4:12
God
I believe that there is only one holy, true and sovereign God who exists in three completely equal and eternal persons described in the Bible as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is the creator and originator of everything that exists. This all powerful God never changes, is everywhere and knows all things.
Genesis 1, 26; John 1:1-4, Ephesians 1, Matthew 3:13-17, James 1:17; 1 John 1:5; John 14: 6; Psalm 139:7-12; Matthew 11:21; Revelation 19:6
Jesus Christ
I believe in Jesus Christ who is the eternal Son of God. He lived and walked on earth being fully God and fully man in order to be the Saviour of all mankind. He was God’s substitutionary sinless sacrifice and gift so sinful man could be made right with God. He was crucified, buried and three days later rose from the grave thus meeting all the righteous requirements of God needed to pay for sin. He is now in Heaven at the right hand of God interceding for believers.
Philippians 2:1-11; John 3:16; Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 15:3- 4; John 1:29; Hebrews 10:12; Matthew 28:16-20; Hebrews 7:24-25
Holy Spirit
I believe in the Holy Spirit who is the third person of the Trinity. At the moment of belief the Spirit is given, only once, as a proof and mark of ownership by God to every believer born into the family of God. The Spirit is the one who begins the process of change in the believer from a Satan controlled sinner to a sacrificial servant of God. The ongoing work of the Spirit is seen in the lives of people through convicting, teaching, guiding, assuring, filling and interceding.
1 Corinthians 12:13; Romans 5:5; John 14:6; 2 Corinthians 1:22; Galatians 5:16-23; Romans 12:1-2; John 16:8-15; Romans 8:14, 16, 26
Man and Sin
I believe that man was created by God, is intended to resemble God and have a vital relationship with God, yet his fallen sinful condition has obscured the image of God that he bears. Through a willful choice to sin, mankind came under the judgment of God for his sin. Man is a hopelessly lost enemy of God who can not free himself from the bonds and penalty of sin.
Genesis 1:26-31; Genesis 3; Romans 5:6-12; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23
Satan
I believe that Satan is real and is the ruler of this world. His powers are great but limited and controlled by God. He fights God and God’s children but will be eternally punished for his sinful rebellion. The children of God can overcome his lies, temptations and hindrances through the personal protection found in God, Christ’s cleansing blood, and the ongoing help of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 13:37-43; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Job 1:12; John 16:11; Revelation 20:10; Ephesians 6:10-18; 1 Peter 5:8; James 4:7; Revelation 12:11
Salvation
I believe that salvation is the undeserved yet free gift that is given by God to sinful man so a relationship which has been broken by sin can be reconciled. This is God’s doing as He chooses, cleanses and includes the new child into His family. Salvation can only be gained through faith in Christ as the sacrificial substitute that paid the price once for all so all mankind could be free from the control of sin. Every true believer is completely secure in their salvation relationship because nothing can separate them from God.
Genesis 3; Romans 3:2, 6:23; Ephesians 1:4-5; Titus 3:3-7; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 2:8-9; Matthew 20:28; Romans 10:9-10; John 10:28-30; Romans 8:28-39
Heaven and Eternal Rewards
I believe that Heaven is the true eternal home and reward for those who have believed in Christ as Saviour. Presently Christ is in heaven preparing a home for all who believe and will one day return for them. Believers will be judged for how they have lived their lives since their salvation. The rewards they receive will depend on how they lived. However the rewards will not be kept by the believers because they will give them back to God out of gratitude for all He has done for them.
John 14:1-4; Acts 1:9-10; 2 Peter 3:13; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 4:10
Hell and Eternal Punishment
I believe that Hell is a place of eternal punishment that is kept for those who refuse to believe in Christ as Saviour. God is not present in Hell but He is the one who still controls it.
Matthew 10:28; Luke 12:5, 16:19-31; Revelation 14:10-11
The Church
I believe that the universal church is made up of believers who being made right with God have become children of God and share a common relationship with Christ their Saviour and leader. The local church is a group of believers that function as a body and together build and encourage each other to know and follow God. The main functions of a healthy growing church are sound teaching, fellowship with other believers, celebrating the Lord’s Supper, baptism, prayer and worship. The mission of the church is to make disciples for Jesus Christ. This is accomplished through the love that they practice in their lives toward God and their fellow man. Their service to others should be noted by their willingness to sacrifice and personal humility.
Ephesians 1:22-23; Hebrews 10:19-25; Romans 12:1-8; Acts 2:42; 1 John 1:7; Psalm 95:6-7; Matthew 28:19-20; Matthew 22:37-40; Matthew 10:37-39; Matthew 20:28
Believer’s Responsibility
I believe that every believer has a responsibility to be involved in the local church for regular fellowship. Involvement in God’s Kingdom does not end just in attendance but in being involved in the church by building the body through the use of their God given abilities and gifts. Their involvement and responsibility extends outward from the church as a consistent witness in the community. The church equips these believers for the work of making disciples from every nationality and language.
Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:19-25; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12; Acts 1:8; Matthew 5:11-16; Matthew 28:19-20
Christ’s Return
I believe in the certain and immanent return of Christ at the end of the Church age. He will visibly return in person to take the believers home too heaven to be with Him. This is the hope that all true believers have which motivates them to be prepared, watching and praying for Christ’s return.
Revelation 22:20; John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Mark 13:32-37; Acts 1:10- 11
