Counter to the Culture

Ephesians 1:17-23
Fitting in, as people we are created for relationships and desire acceptance. Yet at times we are willing to compromise our values and beliefs to gain the fleeting praise and acceptance of others. This is simply called peer pressure. We often think of this term in relation to teenagers who are pressured by their peers into making unwise decisions. However, we can be pressured to conform even when we are older. It is often said that, “Everything is for sale and everyone has a price.” The book of Daniel records perhaps the best recognized examples of a response to peer pressure. The first chapter records Daniel and his three friends in a foreign land in training to serve the king. Daniel resolved in his mind not to defile himself with the food that was unclean and unacceptable by God’s standards (Daniel 1:8). Later in the book the three friends of Daniel are threatened with death if they did not worship the gold statue of the king. In the face of immense pressure they reaffirm their belief in God to deliver, and their resolute refusal not bow to the statue (Daniel 3:16-18). Where does that kind of confidence come from? In Ephesians chapter one Paul prays that the Ephesian church will know God better (17). He prays that they will know the hope, riches and power found only in knowing God (18-23). Our hope is based on Christ and not on what we dream to achieve. Our wealth is found in a merciful God who lavished on us the gift of His Son who died for us to make it possible for us to become part of His family. The same unmatched power that God used to raise Jesus from the grave is now resident in the one who places their faith in Christ to save them. Through God’s power we can withstand temptations and live counter to the pressures found in our culture.

Discouragement

1 Kings 19:1-18
Talk about discouragement. I watched as all my hard work slid to one side and oozed all over the bottom of the refrigerator. It all started with a dream. I had heard a news report where a baker combined a cake with a pie. The concept is fairly simple. Take a fully baked pie and turn it upside down in a cake pan. Next, pour a cake mix over the pie and bake. Repeat the process with two more pies and complementary cakes, then turn them over, stack them together, slather them with icing and enjoy. My problem was that the cherry pie was not firm enough and the chocolate cake was not cool enough. My elaborate dream ended up in a disastrous pile of goo in the fridge. What a mess! My wife and I laughed, because that is all we could do. I was disillusioned and discouraged. However, with new hope, a new plan and new pies I was able to finally pull off a towering delight that combined three cakes and three pies. First Kings 18 records the events of the disillusioned and discouraged prophet Elijah. Previously, Elijah had seen God perform a great victory over the false prophets, provide rain to the drought parched land, and the energy to out run the king and his chariot. Now, Elijah was spiritually disillusioned with the results of Mt. Carmel, physically drained from running, and emotionally discouraged. Has your dream turned to despair? Elijah was there. The queen threatened his life and he ran in fear (19:3). How can we live life with God’s point of view and not discouragement and fear? This Bible text calls us to remember God’s past work, believe that God is in control, find strength in God, listen to His word and follow His directions. When we do, God becomes central and the circumstances become secondary.

Victory of Faith

Hebrews 11:32-35
Hockey is one of the most demanding sports. The game is played for 60 minutes with the opposing team having one goal, your defeat. The opponent will constantly chase and harass you. They will try to knock you off your game, knock you off your feet, knock you into the boards, and knock the puck into your goal. The game is a constant battle. In the end there is only one winner. All the skirmishes and battles for the puck lead the strongest team to victory. This constant battle describes the life of faith for the believer in Jesus Christ. But what if you knew that that you were on the winning team? Hebrews 11 builds on the theme that belief in Christ is supreme. After previously covering a number of hero’s of the faith the author mentions six specific individuals plus the general group of prophets (32). These are ones who have lived a life of victorious faith in God in the battles of life when the opposition is fierce (33-35). However, unlike a hockey player, their faith views the impossible as possible because they are on God’s team. We struggle with this because we live life with earthly eyes that do not have an eternal perspective. The faith chapter of Hebrews 11 is recorded so we can see that victory is possible when everything points to certain defeat. This chapter and the examples of people who lived by faith are given to encourage us in living a life of faith that is based securely on Christ. You see, Jesus has already secured the eternal outcome on the cross. Through the example of these people we are encouraged to live by faith in our daily spiritual battles. 1 John 5:4-5 tells us that victorious people of faith are children of God who have complete confidence in God through their belief in only Jesus as their savior. Are you on His team? Are you relying on His strength for His outcome?

Philippians 2:1-11
One of my favorite types of online videos involves people rescuing lost or abandoned dogs. The story typically plays out in one of two ways. First, someone sees an abandoned dog in a certain location for a number of days and then returns with group of friends and a bag of hamburgers as a mouth watering incentive for the dog. The video ends with the dog being loaded into a car and heading off for a new life. The second, involves an abandoned dog in a shelter that has literally shut down emotionally and cowers in a far corner. Someone decides to make the effort, stepping into the cage and befriends the scared dog. Both scenarios end with the dog going to a new home with a new owner and with a happy look on their face. This all took place because someone was willing to step into the world of a dog that was lost and without hope. The same is true for the human race. We are stuck, and without hope of ever finding spiritual freedom and a new life of victory over sin. Philippians 2 tells us that hopeless situation changed when Jesus, as God, humbled Himself and served humanity by giving Himself to pay for our sin (8). He did this by stepping into our world, and became human like us (7). He stepped away from His position as God (6) to meet our greatest need. In love, Jesus graciously served helpless humanity by not only revealing Himself to us but also rescuing us. Just as the animal lovers seek to restore the lost dog and give it a new life, we need to remember that apart from God we are helpless and hopelessly lost in sin. However, when we experience God’s gracious gift of salvation given through Jesus we can then step into the world of others who are lost, and joyfully point them to Jesus and the new life He gives.

Walk in Spiritual Victory

Ephesians 6:10-20
Growing up in the country of snow and ice there was a simple process that was repeated in the fall and spring of each year. That project was changing car tires from summer tires to winter tires. Summer tires were good for dry or perhaps even wet roads, but winter tires were essential for traction in snow, and especially grip on ice. The main difference between winter and summer tires were the steel studs that are installed in the tread that provided control in slippery, ice covered road conditions. In Ephesians 6:10-20 Paul closes out his practical emphasis to the Ephesian church by challenging them to walk in spiritual victory and use the spiritual armor that God provides. Throughout this section of verses Paul describes the battle armor of the Roman soldiers that was known by his audience. Paul uses that that picture of armor to illustrate spiritual truth when dealing with the real enemy, Satan (12). In verse 15 Paul address the feet of the soldier that provide a foundation, direction and stability. Each soldier would strap a sandal to their foot that would have small nails in the soles. These prepared sandals would guard against slipping in battle. Likewise, Paul reminds the Ephesian believers that their security in life and stability in spiritual battle are found only in the gospel of peace (15). The schemes of the devil may be difficult and distracting. However, the one who believes in Jesus as savior finds the ability to remain calm even when under attack. Do we use what God has given to us when facing spiritual battles? We are in a real battle with a real enemy who seeks to destroy us. We need real protection and real power to stand in opposition to the enemy. The good news is that stability is found through trusting Jesus as savior. In Him we find peace in conflict, a firm foundation of grace, and the ability to stand without slipping when under attack.

What is Salvation?

Romans 8
Several years ago a dog was dumped in our neighborhood. She was a dirty, hungry mess and did not trust people. I first noticed her just lying in the road, most likely where her previous owners had dropped her. She soon became the conversation of the neighborhood as various ones tried to catch the dog, feed the dog and some even called the police to catch the dog. Nothing worked. She was lost and alone after being rejected by her previous owners. I decided to offer her a chance at a new life. One where she could belong, be fed and secure. That took time. I started by talking to her and letting her experience my presence from a distance. Gradually she tolerated me, to a point. Next, I introduced food, the tasty treats that enticed her and met her deep hunger for more. I remember tossing the treats and coaxing her closer and closer until finally she was eating out of my hand. As you can guess, the rest is history. I now have a 40 pound ball of fuzz who trusts me and enjoys being with me more and more each day.  Is that not what God does for us? We are lost and alone in a world of sin and Jesus pays the price for our sin so we can be set free to live a new life with Him. He saves us from the power of sin and a life ruled by sin. He alone gives us peace and helps us trust Him each day. Finally, by believing in Jesus Christ as savior, we find peace and security in the presence of God as we move from this life to the next. Just like my dog, Jesus seeks to have a relationship with us and save us from sin, give us victory over sin and guarantee our future with Him.

Be Still

Psalm 46
Where I grew up there was a simple saying… “Two men working together can do the work of three or four men working alone.” You would think that it is not possible, but it is. The sheer efficiency and ability to team up on a project, plus the boost of morale helps the team of two accomplish much more together than multiple people alone. I have seen that truth play out in physical life and also in spiritual life. For those of us who know Christ as Savior, we have a partner and strong refuge that we can always rely on. Psalm 46 reminds us as people that God is as a strong defender. This Psalm is written as a song reminding the hearer that God’s power is sufficient for victory over the disasters experienced in nature and the conflicts brought on by nations. Psalm 46 describes God’s strength (1-3), and presence (4-7) that are essential for us to function in a world that is falling apart. We can respond in confidence to the chaos of our world as we worship God who is not only present but powerful to protect (8-11). When we stop our own striving and effort (10), we then have the space to be still and observe who God is and what He does. This Psalm reminds us to praise God for the victory He brings because of His strength and presence. The problem is the difference between knowing that truth and practicing that truth. When I am still and stop my striving, I realize that God is at work in my world for His honor and His praise. He can only be lifted up or exalted as I cease trying to solve my battles my way. When I pause and rest in God, others will take notice and see God’s strength. Have you teamed up with God or are you trying to work out your life alone and on your own?

Hope - Encouragement to Live by Faith

Revelation 1:1-8
Do you remember the Merry Go Round from a school playground in your child hood. I remember one where several of us boys would get on while the others remained off. The task was very simple. If you were on the Merry Go Round you tried with all your might to stay on. If you were off the Merry Go Round your job was to spin it as fast as possible to make those that were on the Merry Go Round fall off. I remember being on the Merry Go Round and spinning so fast and so long that I thought it would never stop while my brothers and friends were just laughing at me. Have you ever wanted something to end, but had no power to stop it? The spinning problem just seemed to go on and on without an end in sight. Perhaps you feel like that now. Perhaps you see this year is a repeat of the previous year, or you feel like this month will never end. Your thoughts are sort of like being on the Merry Go Round as you scream, “Stop the world and let me off!” The book of Revelation is a reminder to remain faithful even when the world and our life seems to be spinning out of control. Revelation reminds us that in the end Jesus wins and controls everything. That was an encouragement to the churches and individuals John was writing to who were struggling to hang on amid pressures and persecution of their faith. Today we may read the book of Revelation looking for answers about the future. However, the emphasis throughout this book is to remain faithful to Jesus by obeying what is written (Rev. 1:3) and hang on to our faith. Make Jesus your focus and not the problem that is spinning out of control.

Shepherds: Amazed by Grace

Luke 2:8-20
In the good old days I spent time listening to my grandfather tell stories about what life was like when he was young. There were stories of farming, fishing and fixing old cars. My favorite is the one about clearing snow. Grandpa lived in a small town that did not have a snow plow. Every time it snowed all the young men in town would gather at the end of the main street. The person in the center would take a shovel of snow and throw it one way. Then others would follow on each side and throw a shovel full of snow toward the edge. As a whole group they gradually formed a “V” and cleaned the road from the center out. Then the next morning all the old cars could travel without getting stuck. For us the good old days are filled with stories for younger generations and memories of better days gone by. However, therein lies a problem. The past is often deceptive because we only remember certain things and grumble about the happenings today. In Luke 2:8-12 the angel presents the message to the shepherds that is good news of great joy… your Savior has been born. This is a message of hope and joy that God has come. Yet often, even today, we look with gloom at the events in our community and the problems in our world while we tell others that they need to change. The message to the shepherds is that Christ has come to save. This is a message of joy that the problems of this life will find their only solution in Jesus. This is a message of hope that we can live a new life of victory through the salvation offered only through Jesus. May our message this Christmas not be about what is wrong, but about the hope and joy that we have in Jesus.

Exodus 14:23-31
The movie Ford v Ferrari, that was released in 2019, tells a story from 1966 of the 24 Hours of LeMans. This is an endurance car race that takes place for 24 hours in the French city of LeMans each year. For years Italian automaker Ferrari, had dominated this racing circuit. However, in the 1960’s US automakers began to respond to the demand for faster and sportier cars. They believed that winning car races was one way to prove to the buying public that their car brand was faster. Ford Motor Company set out to do just that in the 24 Hours of LeMans. To make a long story short Ford built a car that accomplished their goal and Ferrari was soundly defeated at Lemans. In much the same way God displayed His authority and completely destroyed the Egyptian army in Exodus 14. Pharaoh’s army persisted in pursuing Moses and the Israelites (23-25), but God caused confusion and chaos and their final calamity. God displayed His power over nature by holding the water in place for the Israelites and then caused it to return to its place covering the Egyptian army (26-28). God delivered His people (29-31). Israel saw the soldiers that they once feared now lifeless and they believed God (31). The lessons for us today are clear. God will not allow any power to thwart His purpose or destroy His plan. He will use any means necessary to display His greatness and gain His victory. God’s goal is to display His power to gain His honor and our commitment to follow Him alone. Do we really believe that He alone is the all powerful God? Let us believe God always and live by faith as we follow Him each day.

The Chase, The Crash, Time to Carry On

11/15/2020

The other day I was talking on the phone and I saw a hawk chasing a dove in flight. In a distracted error the dove flew into a screened window and bounced off and onto the ground. At the last second the hawk swerved and took a perch in a nearby tree in order to locate the dove. I thought the dove was dead, but stunned as it was it hobbled over and hid in some bushes next to the house.

I watched the dove as I talked and also kept a look out for the hawk. At one point after about 15 minutes I crept closer to the bushes and gently separated them so I could see if the dove had died from some injuries sustained in the crash. Much to my surprise the bird was very much alive and instantly took flight with a furry of pounding wings.

The problem was that the hawk was still watching. Instantly the predator took up the chase again. Again the dove escaped by flying into some thick brush for protection.

As I reflected on this I saw a spiritual parallel. Often in life we may feel like we are chased and pursued by Satan and his temptations. We may get distracted from the path that God has for us and crash with the sin. We can find the rest, protection and renewal close to God just as the dove found in my presence. Renewed, restored and rested we are able to take flight and live the way God designed us to live for His glory and honor.

Regardless of your current condition remember the importance of being close to God and remember that the hawk did not win.
