Provision

Genesis 14
Contentment, that is what I observed as I watched four deer settle on my yard for the afternoon. The weather was projected to be hot and it turned out to be accurate. The morning sun had superheated everything as it moved across the sky. By noontime the surrounding trees began to provide some shade. That is when the deer cautiously stepped out of the surrounding undergrowth and began trimming the grass in my yard for me. After eating their fill each one found a shaded spot and laid down to rest. Their needs had been supplied, they were satisfied and safe. In reflecting on the drowsy deer I realized that is the same response that Abram had in Genesis 14. In his victory over the invading kings (13-16), Abram brought back all that was held captive. Out of all that he now possessed he gave a portion as a tithe to God (20). Abram experienced victory because he faithfully followed God who provides all things to display His greatness. God supplied all that was needed for the victory, everyone and everything was safe. Abram was satisfied and not tempted by the offer from the King of Sodom (21). Abram realized that all he possessed was from the bountiful resources of the all powerful God that he served. No king could do what God had done. Abram was completely content with what God supplied. He refused to be indebted to any other person (22-23). Abram’s story is not that much different from ours. God has pursued us and saved us because he loves us. We receive the blessing of God’s provision, but then fall into the temptation of seeking to gain more from His blessing or believing that it is not sufficient. The deer in my yard do not lack faith and contentment in God’s sufficient provision. Do not worry, instead be satisfied (Matthew 6:26-33). May we find contentment and trust God’s complete supply found in Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

Enduring Example

Matthew 1:18-25
Moral relativism believes that there are no absolutes of right or wrong, and thus there is no absolute truth. This leads to the belief that a universal moral code is not necessary because each person determines what is right. In other words the person holding a morally relativistic position will withhold judgment. However, across the world various cultures have set moral and ethical standards. These standards of moral code guide that society toward peace and a cohesive unity. At times those standards will be enforced through shame, guilt or fear. To remove any doubt, there are standards that are defined by a pure and holy God that are applicable for all cultures of all time. In the first chapter of Matthew cultural standards are at work. Mary was found to be pregnant (18). The cultural commitment in the betrothal or engagement period required complete fidelity. For Joseph the cultural condemnation was clear, yet God’s direction was just as clear. God called Joseph to do what was opposite to the current culture and take Mary as his wife (20). Joseph now faced a dilemma. Should he follow the culture and avoid the personal shame and distance himself from Mary, or should he bear the shame and follow God’s direction? Joseph’s obedience was clear. He chose to listen to God’s voice. We can hold Joseph up as the example to follow. He carried the cultural shame of that decision as he daily faced the cultural scorn and reproach. Yet Joseph is only the example not the one we are to copy. Hebrews 12:1-3 reminds us that our life has a purpose to be a living example of enduring faith. Our focus is to be on Jesus Christ who obediently endured the shame of the cross to give us new life. We need consistent obedience to God’s word and faithful endurance to live as an example of righteous faith for our culture. Christ is to be exalted in us (Philippians 1:20).

The Storm

Matthew 7:24-29
The other day a storm blew through our town and attacked my street. Looking out the window, I watched as the dark clouds approached. The lightning flashed, the thunder cracked, and the wind driven rain seemed to fall in buckets. From the safety of inside I watched as the trees whipped wildly back and forth. I was not affected. The house, despite its age, did not creak or groan. It was unmoved. I found out later that our street made the news for all the damage. Across the street there were large trees down that took work crews with heavy equipment several days to clean up. My neighbor and I, each had a large branch down in the yard. The road into town was littered with trees that did not survive the storm, but my house stood firm. Why? The answer is simple. Under my house is one big rock. My house is anchored to the rock. In Matthew 7 Jesus mentions two men who each built a house. One built on sand, and one built on a rock. Which one do you think was able to withstand the storms? Jesus used the house to illustrate the life of the individual. He opens this story by stating that the person who hears His words and practices what is heard is like the man who built on a rock (24). From the outside the houses, or lives, look similar. The difference is found in the anchoring structure that is tested in the storms of life. Following Jesus is not just symbolic or stylistic. Following Jesus offers eternal spiritual value and practical daily substance that changes the way you live. How you respond during the pressures and storms of life will display on what you have built your life. Knowing Christ and His word is essential for now and eternity. Our belief in Jesus and the practice of a victorious new life provides a firm foundation that withstands any storm.

Steps of Faith

Genesis 12
In September of 1846, Sir John Franklin’s expedition to find the Northwest Passage came to an ominous halt in ice. The two ships, Erebus and Terror, began the journey in 1845, but now they were ensnared in the ice of northern Canada around King Island. Franklin, the expedition leader died in 1847. By April 1848, the remaining crew decided to avoid a similar fate by walking across the frozen ground. They were lacking in proper provisions, and preparation, and as a result, they all died trying to escape. Have you ever looked at your situation and realized that your resources were short and your strength was limited? In Genesis twelve, God spoke to Abram and told him to leave where he lived and relocate (1). This was not a move across town, but a move across literal countries. Abram responded by faith and arrived safely (4-5) under God’s faithful provision and protection. His response upon arriving was to build an altar and worship God (8). Like Abram, God still calls us to leave our comforts and follow Him by faith. The difficulty is that we want God to tell us where He is taking us and how it is all going to work out. That is not faith. God desires that we trust His plan completely and follow His process obediently. The struggle of practicing our faith is that we have a tendency to only go halfway with God. We want to know that we have at least one foot on solid ground while we gingerly test God’s direction with the other. God is all powerful and always faithful. We can trust Him at all times in every situation. Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek God and His righteousness first and He will provide all that is needed. How is your faith? Are you taking the steps to follow God in obedience to His direction? We believe by faith and live by faith because God is always faithful.

The Choice of Worship

Genesis 7-9
This week I had cancer surgery… again. The spot had been a growing irritation, but I had grown accustomed to the bother and eventually ignored it as a new normal. However, a doctor determined otherwise. So, after further consultation, the solution became clear. The only viable option to the cancerous invasion was surgery. Radical action was required to remove the cancer. If allowed to remain, the cancer would continue to grow and spread unchecked. The same is true of sin. Sin can creep in and subtly take over and lead to death. The book of Romans tells us that the wages, or pay off, of sin is death (Romans 6:23). As we turn our attention to Genesis 7-9, God takes drastic measures to address the infection of sin that had taken over the world. The one sin of Adam and Eve had completely contaminated the whole of humanity. God now steps in and uses the drastic surgical method of a flood to address the infection of sin. In the midst of the corruption of sin, God looks for those who were righteous, and finds only Noah (Genesis 7). The totality of sin leads to God’s judgment through the flood (Genesis 8), yet God is faithful despite the sin (Genesis 9). Noah was a righteous man who followed God when everyone else rejected God. Can the same be said of us? Noah was righteous because of his faith in God and obedience to God (Hebrews 11:7). Noah made the choice to worship and honor God by living a life devoted to God in the midst of sin. Even today, God is still looking for committed disciples who will turn from sin and follow Him. You may wonder if following God is worth it. God is looking for people, like Noah, who choose to worship Him and not their sin. These are the type of people that God will use to make a difference in a sinful world.

The Change

Genesis 3:8-24
Years ago I ended up taking care of a rescued dog that my daughter had befriended. She did not have a living situation that allowed dogs so I ended up with a tricolored Australian Shepherd named Sky, that had definitely been abused. Despite being about 50 to 60 pounds he cowered in my presence when we first met. I learned very quickly that he had a streak of stubborn independence, and that he did not like men in particular. As I watched him and worked with him, I began to assemble some of the puzzling pieces of his past life. He probably had an owner that cared very little for him and so Sky developed the bad habit of an independent streak that opposed his owner. After various forms of abuse the owner seems to have hauled the dog to the middle of the woods and dumped him to fend for himself. That is where my daughter found him at camp. An owner that did not care, and a stubborn dog who refused to obey, was a recipe for disaster. The dog that cowered before me was broken and needed the loving, but firm hand, of one who was trustworthy. Similarly, we as people stubbornly insist on our way, just like Sky, or Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter three. I had to pursue a relationship with a broken dog just as God pursued a relationship with stubborn and sinful humanity (8-9). God refused to turn away from the creation that He made and the people that He loved. In His love, he moved toward the sinners calling them back to Himself. In sin, Adam and Eve ran and hid from God’s presence (10). Sin caused the separation from God and from enjoying His good. God is good, His word is true, and His way is right. We, like a broken dog, need to listen to Him, trust Him and follow Him in order to experience His goodness and rest.

Downward Spiral of Sin

Genesis 3:1-7
Beliefs mattered to the early church. Around 400 AD there were two men who took opposing views on the issue of the original sin that started in the Garden of Eden and the sinful nature that has been passed down through generations. The first man is Pelagius. He rejected the idea of original sin and instead argued that humanity has the capacity to obey and follow God’s law perfectly. On the other side of the debate is Augustine, who believed in the complete sinfulness of man and the need for man to completely depend on the grace of God for salvation. Today, we face a growing and concerning trend in that people believe they are basically good. Studies show that even church attenders do not believe that they are sinful and in need of God’s grace. This trend is worsening in the younger generations. The deceitfulness of Satan still reigns as he still tries to convince people that they are good without God. The problem is this the same argument that was used in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. The opening verses of this chapter describe a downward spiral of sin. First there is Satan and the deceptive temptation (1), which is followed by the distortion of God’s words (2-3). The next step down involves doubting God (4-5), which leads to desiring other things apart from God (6). Finally, the first human couple disobey God’s direct command and thus commit the first sin (7). Their broken moral character is now passed down from generation to generation. We can choose to follow sin or we can choose to follow Christ. I exhort you, as does Augustine from the pages of history, call out to Christ for the forgiveness of sin and the salvation of your soul. We are not able to fix ourselves. We as sinners (Romans 3:10-11, 23-24), must depend on a gracious God who loved us and gave Himself for us (Ephesians 5:2).

Cure for the Culture

Philippians 1:9-11
When we think of a broken heart we often think of a love that is lost and the individual flounders searching for a personal emotional cure to a failed relationship. However, there is actually a health issue called broken heart syndrome. This heart problem is caused by some sudden stress that is placed upon the individual. This stress may come from a physical event like a car accident, an emotional event like grief or fear and even perhaps from consuming certain strong or spicy foods. The symptoms of broken heart syndrome are very much like a heart attack with chest pain and shortness of breath. However, broken heart syndrome is reversible within a few days or weeks because its cause is tied to the body and its production of a large amount of adrenaline. As we look at our world we see people with a spiritual heart issue. We see people living with a broken heart and not knowing the cure, and yet searching for one. As Paul says in Philippians chapter one there is a cure, and we as believers in Jesus Christ carry the cure. Paul is praying for the Philippian church that their love will thrive and multiply (19). This is an admission that they are a loving church, but also a petition asking God to step in and work in the life of this church even more. This love that the church has is a love that imitates God’s love in its sacrifice and service. This is not a romantic love or even a love between friends. God’s love is to be lived out by His followers because He has loved them first and therefore the church has the ability, capacity and example of how to love (1 John 4:19). We carry the cure of Christ and His forgiveness and love to a world full of people with a broken heart. God displays His cure for our culture through us as we love like Him.

Discouragement

1 Kings 19:1-18
Talk about discouragement. I watched as all my hard work slid to one side and oozed all over the bottom of the refrigerator. It all started with a dream. I had heard a news report where a baker combined a cake with a pie. The concept is fairly simple. Take a fully baked pie and turn it upside down in a cake pan. Next, pour a cake mix over the pie and bake. Repeat the process with two more pies and complementary cakes, then turn them over, stack them together, slather them with icing and enjoy. My problem was that the cherry pie was not firm enough and the chocolate cake was not cool enough. My elaborate dream ended up in a disastrous pile of goo in the fridge. What a mess! My wife and I laughed, because that is all we could do. I was disillusioned and discouraged. However, with new hope, a new plan and new pies I was able to finally pull off a towering delight that combined three cakes and three pies. First Kings 18 records the events of the disillusioned and discouraged prophet Elijah. Previously, Elijah had seen God perform a great victory over the false prophets, provide rain to the drought parched land, and the energy to out run the king and his chariot. Now, Elijah was spiritually disillusioned with the results of Mt. Carmel, physically drained from running, and emotionally discouraged. Has your dream turned to despair? Elijah was there. The queen threatened his life and he ran in fear (19:3). How can we live life with God’s point of view and not discouragement and fear? This Bible text calls us to remember God’s past work, believe that God is in control, find strength in God, listen to His word and follow His directions. When we do, God becomes central and the circumstances become secondary.

Renewed

Colossians 3:1-11
Understanding the difference between truth and falsehood has been a problem for humanity since the beginning of time, as seen in Genesis 3 with Adam and Eve. Even today, we struggle determining what is true as we watch the news. Yet, the truth will always be made clear. For example, how can you tell a real diamond from one that is fake? One simple test is to place the stone on a newspaper. If you can see through the stone and read the words it is fake. A real diamond will intensely reflect light not allowing you to see the words. A real diamond reflects the truth where a fake diamond lacks the reflective quality. As in life, you will be able to see through what is false. So what does true spirituality look like? How can we determine a genuine spiritual life in contrast to a fake? In our study of Colossians, Paul challenges his readers regarding their following of others and their false ideas about a spiritual life rather than following Christ. In Colossians chapter 3 Paul changes the focus of his letter from what to know about Christ to how to walk with Christ. With this shift, the audience is challenged to live a daily spiritual life not based on the false reality of false teaching, but on the reality of what Christ has done for them. Their focus, like ours, should be on a God pleasing lifestyle not on a life of sin and self pleasure. If Christ is truly supreme in our life then our consistent desire will be to reflect God’s purity through our lives. So, set your mind and heart to live for Christ and encourage others to do the same. If we truly believe that Christ is supreme then we will allow Him to be supreme in us and reflected through our life, like a diamond. That is genuine spiritual life.

The Disciple's Passion

Matthew 22:34-40
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. With that, our thoughts are drawn to what we love, who we love, and how we might show that love. Love is the root of a passionate expression. We can say that we love ice cream, sports, coffee or someone, but there is always an expression of that love. In its simplest form passion is doing what we love and loving what we do. Being a person of passion is expressing the strong excited response that is based on the deeper sense of love. If there is not a connection that attracts then there will not be the action based on the attraction. The Bible lays out God’s passionate connection for all humanity in John 3:16. God loved the world so much that He gave Jesus, His only Son, to be our savior from sin. Love is the motivation for the extreme action of God’s passion. The passion displayed in the action proves the reality of the love. In Matthew 22 Jesus was asked to identify the greatest command in the law (36). In response He says, love God and people (37-39). Jesus came and displayed God’s love to us so we can display His love to others. The good news of God’s love drove His passionate display of love. Our display of love for others is to be based on our understanding and acceptance of God’s love passionately displayed for all the world to see. That is life changing love, the kind of love that God wants His committed followers to display to others. On our own we do not have the capability to accurately display God’s love. Yet, as disciples of Jesus, we are graciously given the ability to love because we have experienced God’s love (1 John 4:19). Are we actively displaying our love for God and others as God has loved us?

The Disciple's Mission

Matthew 4:18-22
As a boy, I had always enjoyed dogs, but never had a chance to have one. Perhaps we never had a dog because Mom and Dad had moved frequently. Eventually, when I was about ten, we settled into a home that I would consider home. Arriving home from school one fall day, I noticed a dog tied up in front of the house. It turns out that some friends needed to find a new home for their dog and my parents approved. Well, that began the process of getting to know the dog and trying to train the dog. There is an old saying, “You can’t teach old dogs new tricks.” That was definitely true of this character. He should have been a good candidate to pull a sled. He was broad and muscular, but he lacked the motivation. He would pull for a bit and only when he wanted to. When he realized I was on the sled the ride was over. I was on a mission to develop him into a sled pulling dog and he wanted nothing to do with my trick. My plans and dreams for him could never compare to his desire for his enjoyment fulfilled his way. You could say it was a training disaster. However, when it comes to reshaping our lives and retraining us God has a plan, but it takes our submission. In Matthew 4 Jesus calls Peter and Andrew to follow Him (18) and promises to make them into something different (19). Change is not easy because we become comfortable with our way. Like these disciples we are called to follow Jesus and allow Him to change us, reshape us and use us for His purposes and honor. Like my old dog; Are we willing to submit to our savior and His new direction for our life? When we do we will find that our life has an exciting new meaning and purpose.

Worship the King

Matthew 2:1-12
The other day as I walked into church I was swarmed by some bubbly bouncing children. Hollering out my name they excitedly asked, “Do you know what day it is?” I was certain that it was Saturday, but decided to play along, “No, I do not know what day it is.” It was then that it all spilled out from various directions, one of them had a birthday that day and another one had a birthday the very next day. With all the excitement and jumping around I was able to join in the celebration by singing Happy Birthday. As Christmas is almost upon us I am getting very excited. Do you know whose birthday it is? In Matthew 2 we pick up the Christmas story of some very excited Magi, commonly known as Wisemen. These men were led by God to come and worship the new king that was born (1-2). Their inquiry of the new king deeply troubled the current king (3-6) because he and the others surrounding him were not interested in another king (7-8). Disregarding the discouraging response the Magi remained intent on following God’s direction to the new born king (9). Arriving at the house they were not somber. Instead they were filled with joy (10) and humbly honored Jesus, the baby born to be our Savior and king (11-12). God graciously invited the foreign dignitaries to come and worship and they did so with honest joyful expectation. Do you know whose birthday it is? At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Like the Magi, a true desire to worship will align our heart with God’s in a proper attitude of joy and humility that seeks to serve Him alone with all that we have. This Christmas lets truly celebrate the birth of Jesus as we submit to Him as the king of our life.

Ministry of the Word

1 Timothy 4
Do you remember the children’s story about The Little Engine That Could who had to work extra hard to keep up with the big trains? One day he had to pull a heavy load up a big mountain. The little train tried to remember all that he had learned from the old wise trains and then put it into practice. As he worked hard and strained to pull the load he kept saying to himself “I think I can, I think I can.” In 1 Timothy 4 Paul is challenging, Timothy, the young pastor, to remember what he has learned and continue practicing his faith in God by being a spiritual example for others by. Paul and Timothy realize that it is only faith in God and His salvation that will save them and the people of the church. Paul encourages Timothy to do three things. First, he is to preach God’s Word because spiritual life is found in Jesus Christ and the truth of Scripture (1-5). Others have wandered from the faith, but Timothy is to remain faithful. Second, lead in the practice of the Word because spiritual life is found in the truths of God’s Word (6-10). Timothy was given a check list in a way to keep the practice of his faith focused. Finally, Paul challenged Timothy to grow in the Word because the church needs a Godly example to follow (11-16). The young pastor was to be the example for all in the church to follow. How is your faith? Have you wandered from the truth or are you practicing the truth? What you believe about God and His Word, the Bible, will affect your life and the life of others. Unlike The Little Engine That Could, faith is not what we can do or think we can do on our own. The practice of our faith is God at work through us as we faithfully follow Him and His Word.

Preserve Solid Faith

1 Timothy 1:18-20
Broken windows, holes in the hull, plus a tilting deck. That is a simple description of various boats I have seen abandoned on the beach. I often wonder what they were like before they were left to rot in the sun and surf. What did they do or not do that led to their undesirable defeated demise? I can recall one boat that is a faded green and a dirty white laying unmoved, at an angle, in the tidal mud for years. A boat that was once valuable and useful is now nothing but wasted junk that clutters the beach. Lighthouses, maps and guides are all available to prevent shipwrecks. The same is true in our spiritual life. We need direction and guidance to navigate the often treacherous waters in our daily life. In 1 Timothy 1:18-20 Paul addresses Timothy regarding the issue of spiritual shipwrecks. He closes out this chapter by naming two men who wrecked their faith because they focused on other things rather than the Biblical truth of the gospel message (20). They rejected personal faith in God and thus blasphemed God through their life. These men were removed from positions of teaching and influence to be taught a lesson. The spiritual shipwreck was public and a visible warning for all. The collapse of faith is evident still today. What do we need to do to combat it? First, we need to be servants, like Timothy, who are committed to serving only God’s agenda in our personal life and church life. Second, we need to be like soldiers who fight for the truth of the gospel not personal preferences and legalistic concepts (19). Finally, we need to be like sailors and use the word of God to navigate life correctly, living as helpful examples of faith not harmful misdirectors. Only by faithfully following Jesus can we find purpose, power and direction to combat the treacherous waters of life.

Participate in Fellowship

1 John 1:6-7
Some years ago I borrowed a canoe from a church member and placed it in front of the church as an illustration of fellowship. So how would an old canoe describe fellowship? Well, the best way to travel in a canoe is with two people. However, two people in a boat does not mean that they have fellowship. They merely exist together without participating in any meaningful activity. But if those two people are in a boat and paddling the same direction they share the experience and are able to benefit from each others efforts as they glide through the water. In Acts 2:42 the early church spent time in fellowship. What is fellowship? Biblical fellowship is defined as participation or sharing, as in sharing in and participating in an activity. In the book of 1 John the author confronts false teaching and beliefs that circulated in the early church by addressing true fellowship. In verse 6 and 7 John challenges his audience to a proper conduct and imitation of Christ that walks as He does. In order to do this we need to align our life and participate in fellowship with Christ our savior. In other words, the correct practice of our relationship with Jesus will impact and direct our correct God honoring relationships with others. Our fellowship with one another is to be a living reflection of our relationship with Christ. Like the early church, we are challenged to live the life changing truth of the gospel in our fellowship with one another. By being in fellowship with Christ and following Him we will see the power of the gospel transform us and transform our relationships with others. Just as we benefit from others being in a canoe and paddling in the same direction with us, so we also benefit others by our walk with the Lord and see the reciprocal effects in our relationships.

What is the Church?

Matthew 16:13-20
“Throw the rocks into the woods and listen to the music they make… rock music!” We all groaned at the joke that our gym teacher had just made. It all started as the weather began to warm, the rocks began to show up and our Jr. High teacher who was also the track coach saw a need. The problem that needed to be addressed was that the gravel running track around the school was full of rocks that would cause tripping or twisted ankle hazards for the track team. His simple solution was to get each and every gym glass outside to throw rocks into the woods and thus clean the track for the runners. However, multiple rocks making multiple thuds is not music in any form. Yet, often we think of the church in that way. We look at what the church does and use that to define what the church is. The function of the church can never define the church. Instead the church finds its source in who God is as one who has a passion for people (Luke 19:10) and a desire for true worshipers (John 4:23-34). Out of that passion and purpose God created something new through the new promise given in the blood of Christ to create a new community of worshipers who are connected through belief in Christ and under the direction of the Spirit. A proper understanding of who God is leads to a correct definition of the church. This in turn directs the function of the church, one that has a passion to whole heartedly follow and worship God. In Matthew 16:13-20 Jesus states that He will build His church (18). Many people have misapplied this passage to historical or present day people. Notice however that Jesus words are a reference to Himself and His action of building His church. Still today we struggle with the idea that our actions are what build a church. In doing so we define the church by what the church does rather than by who the church is founded on. It is just like saying that rocks make music. When we believe that our actions build the church that is not music to God’s ears… it is just a dull thud, like rocks falling in the woods.

Patient Faith in Pain

Pain tolerance is the maximum level of pain that we can put up with. Each person has a different level of pain tolerance. Our body will feel the pain and our brain will register how bad the pain is on our personal pain meter. For example, getting a shot from a doctor would be on the lower end of the pain meter, but having a large rock fall on our foot and break bones is a completely different level of pain. We as people deal with all kinds of pain, through out our lives, that can’t be measured by our personal pain tolerance. We all face physical pain from the bumps, bruises, and cuts in life. Yet beyond that we face emotional or psychological pain over personal loss and grief. How do we deal with pain? If we expect God to protect us from a life of pain we will miss seeing His power to save and our faith grow as He works through our pain. In Job 2 we now see the godly man Job face personal pain after the loss of all his possessions. Job is personally impacted by pain from the sores that cover his body (7). He also faces social pain as he is now an outcast from society sitting in a garbage dump (8). To top it off, Satan uses Job’s wife against him, to carry out his plan of seeking to turn Job from God (9). Job corrects his wife (10), because he understands that God uses problems to test us, train us, and grow us. Job understands that faith involves more than his personal comfort. Yet many people today base their faith on their comfort rather than on God. When the pain of this life can no longer be tolerated they question, doubt, and turn from God. Job did not tolerate his pain, instead he saw God as the only solution to his pain. When our pain comes, may we be like Job and follow God by faith.

Job's Character

Job 1:1-5
A police officer was making his rounds in the city. As he approached one intersection he noticed a commotion in the traffic ahead. As he puled his patrol car closer he saw an irate woman screaming at the top of her lungs, throwing stuff at other cars, and honking her horn for no reason at all. After observing this for a bit the officer turned on his lights and pulled the woman over. The woman angrily questioned why she was being stopped. The officer replied that he noticed the bumper sticker on the back that said, “Follow Me To Church.” He continued, “I looked at the bumper sticker, and I looked at your actions, and I thought that the car must be stolen.” Saying one thing and doing another is the definition of hypocritical character and a life that is spiritually out of balance. Character matters because it is the moral resolve in life that leads to a life lived with integrity, resulting in a good reputation. We see this in the life of Job. Even though Job was very wealthy (3), he still lived out his faith in front of his community (1), and family (2). There are three things that we can learn from Job in these verses. First, our character will display our relationship to God (1). How we live will authenticate what we claim about our relationship to God. If we talk about God but do not live for Him, then God is not followed. Second, our character will impact our view of money and possessions (3). How we treat our possessions will authenticate our relationship with God. If money and possessions are more important, then God is less important. Third, our character will impact our spiritual relationship with others (4-5). How we treat others spiritually will authenticate our relationship with God. If we say nothing about Jesus and do not point others to Jesus, then is He our God?

Temptation

Matthew 4:1-11
Temptation, how can we overcome it and how can we prepare for it? It was a very hot day and I was thirsty. In the middle of that day I faced a huge temptation to take a case of juice that was in a shopping cart in the middle of a store parking lot. Someone forgot to put it in their vehicle. No one was around so I picked it up… and then returned it to the customer service desk. I really could have used it, but I chose not to take it because taking it would not have pleased God. In Matthew 4:1-11 Satan tempts Jesus to do his bidding and submit to him, but Jesus rejected each temptation. After each temptation He quotes Scripture to combat the specific temptation placed before him. There are four ways that we can address the temptations that come into our lives. First, we need to be aware of Satan’s temptations by being watchful for our own pride and human weaknesses. Second, we need to prepare for temptations by spending time with God and His Word. Third, we will declare that God alone is worthy of our worship. In contrast, Satan’s desire is for us to submit and follow him rather than God. Finally, we need to care for others who are tempted, and point them to Jesus, our savior, who will help them and give them hope. Finally, our view of God will affect our attitude toward others who are struggling with temptations. When we are under the pressures of temptation we need to keep our eyes on Jesus and follow His solutions for life. 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us that God will give the strength to stand up under the temptations that we face. Do we believe that God is greater than Satan and our temptations? What we believe will affect the way we live.

The Disciple's Characteristic: Commission

Deuteronomy 31:1-8
One of the greatest paintings of all time is the work of Michelangelo, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel located in Rome. This enormous piece of art literally pictures much of the Old Testament from Genesis to the kings and even several prophets. The central part of the ceiling illustrates scenes from creation to the flood, with the central pieces showing God creating Adam and Eve, followed by their fall into sin. The main character is God, and Michelangelo depicts the human response to God. This is best illustrated by God reaching out to create Adam. This enormous project was commissioned in 1508 and finished in 1512. The contract, in today’s money, paid him approximately $600,000 in gold coins. Today when we think of a commission, we think of a sales person who earns a commission from selling a car; or an artist, like Michelangelo, who is commissioned to paint a picture. However, a commission is more than that. When used in the Bible the giving of a commission involves authority, communication, action, and completion. In Deuteronomy 31 Moses challenges the people (1-6), and commissions Joshua (7-8). Moses wants the people to experience God’s promised land, and Joshua is commissioned to lead the people into the land under God’s authority. A commission is where someone is given the authority by someone greater to complete a task. Joshua is reminded by Moses, that God will go before him and be with him (8). That is God on a mission with His servant. God’s commission for our lives begins with His authority over our lives. We must listen to His Word and respond obediently by seeking to complete His desires. Are we on our own mission? Are we under God’s commission? Are we living a life of omission, refusing to follow? A disciple responds to God’s commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

The Disciple's Characteristic: Persuasion

Acts 17:1-15
Physical therapy is not something that is pleasant, but often it is necessary. Physical therapy is the process of getting your body to move the way it is was designed. The problem is that, because of injury or illness, our body has stopped moving in certain ways. In order to overcome this, we must stretch and restrengthen certain muscles to regain motion, mobility, and balance. However, physical therapy can be painful and tiring. It is much like someone twisting your arm behind your back to get you to change your mind or action. Physical therapy has a way of convincing your mind and your body that you can do this. When we think of persuasion, it is not just on a physical level. There is also a mental persuasion that takes place on a spiritual level. All of us become persuaded by certain beliefs and we live our lives convinced of these truths. In Acts 17 Paul presents new information that confronts the beliefs of the people in Thessalonica. Some were persuaded (4) to believe and follow Jesus, while others were not. So, what did Paul do? He simply reasoned with them from the scriptures (2-3). How did God use Paul to convince this audience of the truth of Jesus and to place their faith in Jesus? He dealt with their questions by explaining who Jesus was. He dealt with their doubts by giving evidence of the resurrection. All of his teaching dealt with the Savior. To be a committed disciple of Jesus, we must be persuaded of who He is, so we can present Him to others. A disciple believes Jesus, follows His leading like Paul (Acts 16:6-10), and tells others that He is the Savior. Knowing about Jesus is one thing. Being persuaded to live out our faith is something completely different. Are we disciples who live like we are persuaded?

The Disciple's Confession

Mark 8:27-38
The courtroom was packed, and everyone waited for the outcome. The audience absorbed the information of the crimes committed as the prosecutor presented his case. The accused man looked unconcerned and even seemed to fidget about as he sat next to his lawyer. The prosecutor finished the volume of charges against the defendant and sat down. At that point the accused man jumped up and blurted out, “I did it completely different, in fact let me tell you what happened.” We normally think of a confession in a criminal sense where the guilty party confesses committing certain crimes. However, a confession admits wrong or a confession admits beliefs. Either way a confession is based on truth. In Mark 8:29-30 Peter responds to the question Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter’s response is one of certainty, confidence, and clarity that Jesus is the Savior. But, the greatest moment for Peter understanding and declaring who Jesus is followed by the downfall of not wanting Jesus to go through with the divine plan of salvation (31-32). Peter wanted a Savior without the cross. Jesus corrects Peter and then presents a challenge to His audience (34) that involves personal loss and commitment. Jesus levels the challenge that anyone who wants to be known as His follower must not only believe, but also submit and serve His desires and plans as King. In hearing these words it is easy to miss what Jesus taught. We think we have to give up something to follow Jesus when He has already given us everything if we believe in Him as Savior. Our problem is that we just do not comprehend all that we have in Christ. If a trial was held today would there be enough evidence to convict you of your belief in Jesus Christ and your commitment to Him? Would you admit to it?

The Disciple's Commitment

Luke 9:23-26
Recently I was reviewing some of my illustrations and came across a computer file titled Confidence Control and Trust that contained a letter from some long time family friends and believers in Jesus Christ. They wrote about the recent passing of a family member and those now left behind. The letter continued by stating that three days before that loss the boss had called the husband in for a difficult conversation which led to him being laid off from his job. I saved the letter because of the second to last paragraph where their commitment to Christ was restated regardless of how dark and difficult their present situation looked. Their stated desire was to be sensitive to what God would have them do and respond accordingly. For the disciple of Christ commitment to Christ is not just when life is easy. Commitment for the disciple means following in the difficult times. In Luke 9:23 Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This verse speaks of the sacrifice of self and the imitation of the selfless attitude and action of Christ. There is also the sacrifice of service as we are challenged to pick up our cross. The cross was well known in Jesus day as a source of suffering that would lead to death. Jesus notes that sacrifice and suffering are marks of those who chose to be committed followers of Him. Jesus says that this is a daily practice, as illustrated by my friends. A disciple of Christ is a committed follower of Christ who practices what Christ has taught and follows the model of how Christ lived. Commitment to Christ counts the cost of following Him in the present and unashamedly follows Him each day, even in the difficult ones. Are we disciples of Jesus who completely believe only in Him and are committed to living only for Him?

Christmas & Influence

Luke 1-2
Influence is the ability to bring change to a situation or person based on insight, knowledge, and power. An influencer is someone who uses their personal ability to promote the change. In our world of technology, companies will contract influencers to promote their product. Those who watch and follow these influencers are then influenced to use the product them selves. However, there is not a single influencer who is able to influence everyone. In contrast, as we consider the events of Christmas, we see that God uses His influence and sovereign power to bring necessary change into our world. First, God displays His sovereign influence over nature and the rules of conception, as seen in Mary; and the standard operation of the sky, as seen with the shepherds and wise men. Second, God displays His sovereign influence over people, as He gathers a cast of unrelated and unconnected characters to converge on the little town of Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph traveled from the North, shepherds came from the fields and wise men traveled from the East. All these people were under the influence and direction of God, and submissive to His leading and plan. This leaves one last group, us. We, as people, are easily overwhelmed and influenced by schedules, events, catastrophes, and changes to our individual world. However, the Christmas season brings us face to face with the reality that the sovereign God has brought hope and change to our world through the birth of Jesus. The good news of Jesus’ birth and salvation should continually influence us. When changes come, do not fear, but submit and trust God like Mary and Joseph. When information is given by God, respond with joy and tell others like the shepherds. When God’s direction is made clear, follow wholeheartedly like the wise men.
