I remember in some of my schooling and studies going through a small group study on identity. It was a good study but some struggled with the reality of being part of God’s family. It is easy to academically work through and comprehend our relationship as adopted children of God, but as believers in Jesus Christ it may be much harder to realize that we are now spiritually related to those next to us. As we look at the first chapter of Ephesians we see that God the Father makes adoption into His family possible through Jesus Christ. If you are adopted that means someone else has made the decision to make you part of their family. That is exactly what God the Father has done for us spiritually. Those who are adopted are now heirs and they share in the Father’s inheritance. For us as believers in Jesus we are part of the family and the family is part of us. God made us part of His family through His grace and for His pleasure. Our job as adopted children is to live the reality of being spiritual heirs who have all the blessings and the relationships with others and our Father God. The result is to praise God for His glorious work of grace that He poured out on us through Jesus.Through Christ’s sacrificial work on the cross, God the Father has made it possible for all people to be His children. If we believe that, and accept that reality, we are instantly adopted and given a new spiritual identity.
