Teaching & Learning Methods
There is a relationship that is based on learning between a teacher and a student. Teachers teach and students learn. The best teachers will strive to motivate their students to learn and see them put to use the material they are teaching. Teachers understand that there are there are three main ways that people learn. We learn by reading, watching and the experience of doing. Some cultures may emphasize one more than the others.
Reading
This may be reading a book on our own or reading a classroom assignment given by a teacher. Reading is a great way to learn and compile information in a concise, compact and orderly manner. The difficulty is that reading involves a mental function that does not encourage application of what has just been read. This form of learning is most often practiced when a teacher talks to students and give assignments so the students learn from reading.
Watching
This involves visual learning from the experience of someone else. This learning is done by watching the actions of another and learning how to do it from their actions. Again this is a great way to learn and perhaps for most people better than reading, but it lacks the opportunity to use what has been seen. This form of learning is most often practiced by observing an elder showing how to accomplish traditional skills or watching a how to video.
Doing
This experience can be encouraged through the teacher or mentor who just demonstrated how to do something. This form of learning takes what has been read or observed in someone else and puts it to use. This is where the deepest level of learning takes place as the student discovers and experiences the truth of knowledge and information that they have previously gathered. This form of learning can be accomplished through the action of self practice or under the guidance of a mentor or elder as certain skills are developed.
Experience is the Best Teacher
Why is experience the best teacher? It is true that people can learn in other ways. Teaching and learning often use a combination of methods to help the student retain information. However, personal experience will be remembered. There are five reasons why moving students to the level of experience in learning is the most beneficial in the long term.

However, personal experience will be remembered. There are five reasons why moving students to the level of experience in learning is the most beneficial in the long term.
- When it is learned it will not be forgotten. The combination of thinking and doing are very important in retaining knowledge.
- What is learned will be personally valuable. The student will see the usefulness of what has been taught.
- How it is learned will provide future skills. The specific steps that are taken will help in repeating the process in the future.
- Why it is learned will develop thinking and decisions. In the process of applying the information to their life the student will be required to sort what is important from reading or watching and apply it personally. This will help them in passing on these truths to others.
- Who it is learned from will guide and impact relationships. When someone takes the time to verbally explain, and demonstrate what they know there is a bond that is created. Knowledge is passed on but a relationship is built on the personality and care of the teacher. Students have the ability to absorb more when they know that the teacher cares.
