Revelation

Author:
John the apostle of Jesus (1:1,9)

Location:
John was writing from the island of Patmos (1:9)
Under persecution, John was exiled to Patmos to keep him quiet from preaching the gospel of Jesus.

Audience:
This letter was addressed to a group of seven churches (1:4). These churches were facing a number of  problems internally and externally. They were dealing with persecution, false teachers, problems of weak or nonexistent faith and even death. It is to these people in these churches that John writes to encourage and teach that Jesus controls history and will ultimately be victorious.

Purpose:
John writes to encourage struggling believers and churches to have hope in the future and to keep their faith in what Christ has done for them. This book is a reminder to the seven churches that received this letter and to us as well that we need to hear the word of God and obey it regardless of our surrounding circumstances because Jesus wins in the end.
