Teaching Text: Ephesians 1:13-14
Teacher Study Notes:
- This passage forms the end of the long sentence that started in verse 3. This section of verses contains the third main idea in this sentence. Paul previously talked about the Father and the Son (review the previous verses and your notes if necessary). In this section Paul presents the believers blessings that are gained through the final person of the Trinity.
- Look for the repeated words in the context of this passage. There are several key phrases that are repeated like praise and in Him or in Christ. These provide important connections that will help with your personal understanding and the development of your lesson.
- Think about the connection that Paul had with this group of believers. The time that he spent with them allowed him to speak directly to them. Paul challenged them in order to help them stand firm in their faith and not waver. However, read Revelation 2:1-7 where God talks to the church of Ephesus about their faithful practice of standing fo the truth. The problem that this church faced is that in the practice of their faith they lost their love for Christ. Think about this aspect of the Ephesian church as you develop your application. How can a person or a church keep their love for God fresh?
- Attraction of the audience to your Bible lesson with an illustration
Discuss a will and what it is. Do you have a will? In a will you get to explain who will get what you own and how much they will get after you die. This is called an inheritance where younger relatives receive the belongings of an older relative who passed away.
Transition by saying...In the Bible passage that we are going to study today we are will see what believers have as an inheritance. - Read the Bible passage
Read the Bible passage out loud or ask someone else to read it out loud Open in prayer
Make general important observations about the passage and the context
Briefly review by telling what has been presented up to this point in the book.
Summarize for the group what will be covered in this section. - Examination of the Bible passage with the group
(These questions are to guide your thinking and development of your Bible lesson.) Who is the “Him” referring to in verse 13?
How does the Spirits work relate to Christ’s work in the previous verses?
What is the progression and process? Why is it important? What is the progression in verse 13?
There are three steps.
Take time to explain them and why each is important and necessary. Why is the Spirit referred to as a promise?
Is there another Bible passage that relates to this idea? Praise is listed in verse 3, 6, 12 & 14. What is the connection? - Application of the Bible lesson
Ask yourself... What is the importance of the believers inheritance? How does having a spiritual inheritance change your daily life?
How can you and I praise God this week for His work of redemption?
